The Hornets have signed Monty Williams to a new four-year contract extension.

“He knows and we know that he’s here for the long term as we develop a young team into a championship contender,” said Saints general manager Mickey Loomis, who also oversees the Hornets’ basketball operations. “I’ve been very impressed with Monty since we purchased the team.

“I’ve also been impressed with Dell (Demps) and the job he’s done and the staff in the basketball operations.”

Williams is entering his third season as head coach of the Hornets.

This is great news. I've always thought he was a great coach.

Not at all. He was going into a lame duck year and has been very good the last two years.
made a lot of moves in the off season. why take the risk of extending now when you can extend later in the year once you know more assuredly he can handle the new players/personalities

And it's not a knock on Monty, I like him as a coach. But the team is going through major changes and imo the org is taking a high risk by extending him before taking the court.

I just have three questions:
What's wrong with extending halfway through the season?

What's wrong with extending now?

What are the benefits of extending now, rather than later?

Just added Austin Rivers, a known ego, and we still have yet to see EG come back after his mood swinging off season. If I'm the GM, I wait for the season to extend. Why? Because I can lower my risk while getting the same exact reward.

Maybe I'm speaking from the POV of a fan who's seen coaches extended, only to be fired shortly into the season

You pretty much answered it yourself. The biggest benefit is as a coach, you now have stability.

I heard this being discussed on a podcast the other day. Maybe Dell and Monty are both on one year deals and feel they need to make a move for now, but could also hurt the future a little, to help strengthen their resume or something. Now, that one year deal pressure is gone.

You missed my point entirely. He was going to be the coach regardless, so what's the difference between now and later? An extension later would lower the risk somewhat, while the results would be no different.

Which is why I said: a tad premature. As in: a tad too soon.
