They are the obvious choices, and now, it would appear, they are the only choices.

ESPN’s Marc Stein reports:

When NBA free agency begins at midnight July 1, Brooklyn Nets star guard Deron Williams will be choosing from a two-team list that only features the Nets and the Dallas Mavericks, according to sources close to the situation.

Sources told ESPN.com on Saturday night that, while this summer’s No. 1 free agent remains “up in the air” about which team he’ll ultimately chose, Williams already has made the decision to narrow his list of potential destinations to those two franchises.

via Deron Williams only interested in signing with Brooklyn Nets or Dallas Mavericks, sources say – ESPN New York.

This has seemingly been the case for a while, but having it confirmed by a source so close to the Mavericks in Stein is significant. Typically a lot of action in terms of both free agency and trades is held up for the biggest move. Teams want to make sure they’re out of the running for a star before making moves for the future. Knowing that it will definitely be one of those two teams makes life easier for the other franchises, of which Stein lists the Blazers, Rockets, Suns, and Lakers as interested parties.

The smart money’s on New Jersey. Which, you know, isn’t that smart at all.

The Nets can offer the most money and years by re-signing Williams under the new CBA, and their move to Brooklyn means more financial opportunities for the All-Star. Stein also reports Williams was scouting a locker at the new Barclay Center on a tour this week. There is every reason to believe that Williams will re-sign with the Nets and make Brooklyn his home, sending Dallas in a drastic new direction for the future.

Some helpful information about the Nets team Williams is so sure of:
Racking up dimes with Dirk or racking up dimes with Kris Humpries Hmmmmm

Or racking up dimes with Dwight Howard or Brook Lopez, MarShon Brooks, and Gerald Wallace.

What did I tell you guys that the Mavericks were a serious contender for Derons services. And no one believed me... I really want Deron to go to the Mavs. That way I can get me another sweet Mavericks jersey.

No one said D-Will wouldn't go there, we said that him and Dwight going there will never happen

The only reason D-Will is considering the Mavs is because he's from Texas

Yea I know that, but Deron and Dirk would be a very lethal combo running the pick and roll. It would be fun to watch, but fun doesnt win championships. I just feel that if I was in Derons shoes I would be leaning towards a much more structured franchise from top to bottom. The Mavericks are a very well run organization that is consistently making the playoffs, the Nets have no prior record of that.

I would have more faith in the Mavericks putting good pieces around me as opposed to the Nets. But if he is looking for more money and the possibility of playing with better players in the short term than the choice is the Nets.

Dunno how smart Dallas would be in the long run. Although Cuban and friends have been very capable of keeping the Mavs competitive through the years, but DIrk is slowely but surely on the decline not I'm not sure how long they could compete at a high level. That is, unless the sign Dwight the year after. Which I'm sure is their primary plan.

He'll never come close to winning a title with either team. It's all a matter of deciding which team is closer to doing so.

I'm not even sure if Brooklyn has the best shot at signing stars. Still seems to be a very poorly run franchise.

Report: Mavericks fear Deron Williams leaning toward Nets

Mark Cuban and the Mavericks gambled — with the new luxury tax provisions looming they knew they needed to strip down their salary in the next couple years or pay a steep price. They had a window last year to do that, so unlike what most owners would have done, Cuband didn’t get the band back together to chase another ring.

But part of the plan was always to lure Deron Williams back home to pair with Dirk Nowitzki and quickly return the Dallas to the league’s elite.

Dallas may lose its bet. Mavericks officials are getting the feeling D-Will is staying in Brooklyn, reports Ken Berger at CBSSports.com.

Four rival executives and a fifth person familiar with Williams’ thinking told CBSSports.com Tuesday that the Mavericks are becoming increasingly worried that the All-Star point guard will stay with the Nets when the free-agent floodgates open Sunday.

While optimists in the Mavs’ camp are holding out hope that they still have a “50-50″ chance of landing Williams, who grew up in Dallas, executives working the phones Tuesday have detected a real concern from the Mavs that Williams will opt to join the Nets in Brooklyn next season.

There has been a lot of mixed buzz and reports on what Williams is thinking in recent weeks. As Berger himself noted, someone in the sneaker industry told him Williams preferred to be in Dallas. My guess — he hasn’t made a decision yet.

Dallas is going to have to sway him that money isn’t everything — Brooklyn has D-Will’s Bird rights and can offer one more year and larger raises than Dallas, which means about $26 million more guaranteed. That’s a lot of money. A whole lot. It matters more than birthday signs.
The only thing we know for sure is that Williams wants to make a quick decision — he wants everything wrapped up before he starts Team USA Olympic training camp in Las Vegas July 6.

Avery Johnson was one of eight people to join Deron Williams for his 28th birthday party on Tuesday, according to sources.

The group also included members of Williams' family and his agent, Jeff Schwartz.

The Nets sent a truck with a Brooklyn Nets logo that read 'Happy Birthday Deron! from your Brooklyn family' to his apartment earlier in the day.

Williams will pick between the Nets and Mavericks, but he has been showing more signs that he will re-sign with Brooklyn.

Williams has been working out on an almost daily basis at the Nets' practice facility and sources say he has discussed strategies for next season with Johnson.

Williams, according to sources, remains undecided about his final intention.

Not at all

Much better roster for sustained success and they'll have more flexibility.
