If the New Orleans Hornets are renamed, the Charlotte Bobcats are expected to explore taking back their old nickname.

The Hornets played in Charlotte from 1988 until 2002.

The NBA awarded Charlotte an expansion franchise in 2004.

The process of renaming a franchise may take up to two years.

They were willing to sell the name to the Hornets for 1.5M + New Orleans and Charlotte splitting their rebrand cost back when the Bobcats came into existence. Whether they would still be open to that is a question though. Tom Benson is going hard after the name however.
