The Houston Rockets suffered a blow to their playoff hopes with news that point guard Kyle Lowry will miss the next 2-4 weeks with a bacterial infection (hat tip to Ben Golliver of CBS Sports).

Houston currently holds the no. 8 seed in the Western Conference. So far as player movement is concerned, Goran Dragic is a nice trade chip for the Rockets and if they have any hopes of playoff contention it probably moves him off the table unless the right deal (Pau Gasol) comes along. But the Rockets will remain, as always, looking for that one elite or near elite player to tie their assortment of parts together.

Where Lowry's absence could make things interesting is for teams sitting just outside of the playoffs that might see this as an opportunity to secure a playoff seed. Any such team sitting on the fence about making a move might be compelled to pull the trigger, even if just for a rental, with Houston likely to fade.
Hoops Rumors

Tough blow for the Rockets and Lowry, who was having a great season.

His season was getting a bit overrated. He still isn't very efficient and his turnovers are up from last year.

His FG% is down but he's shooting great from 3 and is getting 16/7/5. I'll take that from my PG.

Lowry's better, but Goran Dragic is no slouch, and he's shown that the last few games. Houston needs to lock him up, too.

i think he's playing his way out of houston
he'll get a nice starting gig somewhere

like Portland perhaps. Felton is a FA after the season

Yeah he is, probably. Houston needs another big. Dalembert has been fantastic for us, but we need more height, and Camby fills that void but he's gone after this year, I'm sure. Either way, I'd be thrilled if Houston can finagle a way to keep Dragic.

Houston gave Lowry a pretty sizable deal when they were still starting Brooks at PG, I assume they'll do the same with Dragic.

yeah but they liked lowry more than brooks
i dont think they like dragic more than lowry

i think dragic is tired of backing up Nash and Lowry. he deserves a starting job

Dragic played great tonight...until the last 5 minutes and OT. He was scared shitless out there, wouldn't take a shot after he'd gone 5-7 from three in the game. I don't know what the hell happened. It was bad, y'all.

The Rockets are making a strong push in the West for a playoff spot. They're currently in eighth, sitting at 26-23.

But if they're going to complete the task and make it into the postseason, they might have to do it without their best player. Because via the Houston Chronicle, Kyle Lowry may not be able to return this year from a bacterial infection:

Lowry said he might not be able to return this season from his bacterial infection and its treatment, but was happy just to be back at a morning shootaround.
“It was very scary for awhile,” Lowry said. “I had a temperature of 104 for a couple days. It's not a good feeling. It's very scary, but it's something that you learn from and you have do deal with and do what you have to do to get better. If I waited a little bit longer I could have been (in danger.) I could have been in a real bad situation if I waited a day longer to go in.

“They don't have a clue how it happened or how this situation came about.”
Lowry discovered he had the medical issue by accident, as he went in to get an MRI on his groin and his team doctor said he didn't look right. So he was sent to the Knicks' physician (the Rockets were in New York) and was diagnosed with a bacterial infection.

"(If not for the groin problem), I wouldn't have got the MRI. The MRI helped me find what was really wrong with me, why I was sick and why I felt the way I felt.

“Terrible. Horrible. Awful. Not right at all,” he said of how he felt that night. “It was just a bad ordeal for me. I was sick before the game. After the game, the guys waited for me an hour. I was trying to get an IV and they couldn't do it. I was cold, shivering, chills. It was just a tough situation.”

Goran Dragic has filled in admirably for Lowry and kept the Rockets ticking. They might have just enough to make it to the postseason without Lowry, but if they have any dreams of doing something when they get there, they're going to have to have their bulldog point guard back.
That sucks.

As long as he's going to be alright, I'm happy. This sounds bigger than basketball.

That makes me think of Sick and Tired by Nappy Roots. "Deep down I know he love her but he shoulda wore a rubber."

Is this what we're assuming is wrong with him, though? Really?

It does, really. I'll admit that. And considering they aren't giving us a definitive infection. I hope it isn't the case, but who knows? I'm not sure that I'm aware of one with those kinds of symptoms, though.

Dude probably is my favorite active NBA player. Chandler Parsons is climbing the ladder, though. You seen him play at all? He might not score 15-20 points every game but he does everything. Defend, rebound, he's a great passer, and he's a hilight reel waiting to happen when it comes to dunks. His +/- is almost always positive when they lose, even.
