Goodell has only tried to use situations, such as these, to make clear and definite examples out of players, coaches, etc. This was no exception for the bounty system that the Saints were running. Reportedly, the Saints had been warned and talked to about this situation, but they failed to cooperate and this continued and eventually reached the conclusion of suspensions.
That is an excellent point, Saints fans shouldnt be bitching about the severity of penalties since they were warned and didnt cooperate.

That's kind of the point though. According to what has been reported (which could be wrong obviously) the NFL told the Saints to put a stop to it. Benson told Loomis and Payton to put a stop to it, Loomis did nothing, I have no problem with his suspension. But Payton went to Gregg Williams and told him to end it, and even made Joe Vitt watch over Gregg Williams. Payton was under the assumption that it was done, that is what he had been told. The players and Gregg Williams continued to do it behind his back. Maybe even Joe Vitt lied to Sean Payton, because he too got a six game suspension, I don't know. In retrospect, I'm sure Payton wishes he had done more than ordered for it to be stopped. But he did do what the Commish asked, that's why his suspension is overkill.

Goodell on Belichick in 07 regarding Spygate:

" I specifically considered whether to impose a suspension on Coach Belichick,” Goodell wrote in September of 2007. “I have determined not to do so, largely because I believe that the discipline I am imposing of a maximum fine and forfeiture of a first-round draft choice...is in fact more significant and long-lasting, and therefore more effective, than a suspension.”

He should have ended it with "in this case"

In that case it was one or the other, suspend people, or fine and take draft picks

In this case, you deserved both

Stop crying

Crying? lmao

I seem to be the only Saints fan who thinks he was actually deserving of being suspended.

At the end of the day, he's the coach and the face of the New Orleans Saints staff. That's who is going to get punished in these kind of situations no matter what. Roger loves to completely make of examples of people to try and deter others from following in the same notion. This is what he is doing.

I'm not going to get into Spygate as a situation, but, all and all when you have people administering players to injure others it's not going to be taken lightly.
