Far too much.

I could get behind the draft picks and fines. The suspensions are just obscenely long when put together with the other punishments. Two second round picks, year long suspensions AND a million dollars + in fines? Seems like Goodell is just making an example out of the Saints. I suppose that was the point, but I don't agree with it.

Just setting an example about how much he puts into player safety. It was a hell of a punishment though.

Call it excessive, but it's one way to get the point across about this, and that's the intent.

No team has ever won the NFC South in consecutive years

I expect that to stay the same

I really haven't listened to anyone discuss the punishment yet but I am sure a huge part of why it is so severe is that the NFL is currently dealing with lawsuits from former players regarding concussions and player safety. Because of that, the league had to come down hard on this with the hopes of using this as leverage in the lawsuit to say that they do take these things seriously and avoid even more of a financial loss.

However, I guess this means that Goddell is the NFL Logo and even bigger then the league itself by being able to do this and how long until the appeals start flying in...

is he the one that ratted yall out?
Supposedly, but it isn't confirmed.

I read that the player who did was released from the Saints and still felt he was a elite level player at his position. Shockey would fit that description.

Why is everyone so shocked?

Goodell has only tried to use situations, such as these, to make clear and definite examples out of players, coaches, etc. This was no exception for the bounty system that the Saints were running. Reportedly, the Saints had been warned and talked to about this situation, but they failed to cooperate and this continued and eventually reached the conclusion of suspensions.

The targets of these deliberate attempts to injure were obviously the signal callers. The NFL is such a huge market, and it generates too much revenue to worry about seeing things like this constantly:

There is no place for intentionally trying to injure ANY opponent in sports. It's completely unprofessional and just fucking bush league. I'm glad these guys got hit for what they did.
