INDIANAPOLIS (AP)—Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers has won the 2011 Associated Press NFL Most Valuable Player award in a landslide.

Rodgers earned 48 votes to two for New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees in balloting by a nationwide panel of 50 media members who regularly cover the NFL. The Packers star is the first Green Bay player honored since Brett Favre concluded a run of three straight seasons as MVP in 1997.

“It means a lot to be recognized as a consistent player and contributing on my team,” Rodgers said. “I think it’s an award that relies on a player having the support of his teammates, obviously, guys blocking, guys running, guys catching, guys making plays. But I’m very honored to receive the award.”

Rodgers received a standing ovation after his name was announced by Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, the league’s only four-time MVP. The award was presented on the “NFL Honors” primetime special Saturday night on NBC.

“We’re all really excited to see you back on the field next year,” Rodgers told Manning.

Rodgers led the NFL in passing with a 122.5 rating built on 45 touchdown passes, six interceptions and a 68.3 completion percentage as the Packers went 15-1 and won the NFC North. The Packers were beaten by the New York Giants at Lambeau Field in the divisional round.

“People really count on me to be consistent each week, to play well. Knowing that my performance, the fact that I touch the ball every play, I have a direct impact on the game, the way I play,” Rodgers said. “And if I’m playing consistent and doing things I know I’m supposed to do, we’ve been able to have some success because of it.”

He joins former Packers Bart Starr, Jim Taylor and Paul Hornung as MVPs.

Rodgers is the third consecutive quarterback voted MVP, joining New England’s Tom Brady (2007, 2010) and Indianapolis’ Peyton Manning (2008, 2009).

right move. It was an insane, tough year to win it too. Lot of good candidates but nobody had a season like he did, regardless of what Matt Flynn did in 1 game.

But he wasn't an MVP in the game that mattered most to his team. That alone should have taken it away from him IMO

The defense gave up 37 points, the Packers lost three fumbles (one was Rodgers) and there were countless dropped passes. To act like he shouldn't have won the MVP because of that game is retarded.

By your logic the MVP must come from the Super Bowl champs.

Lots of Saints fans are bitching about this move, but I feel he was the most deserving.

What about the the two open TD passes he missed?

No..
An MVP could still play great when they lose. Aaron Rodgers didn't even play great when they lost.
So because he didn't play perfect the entire year he can't win MVP?

Not to mention this is a regular season award so I'm not sure what you're arguing here.

So the regular season means something? I didn't know being the best team in the regular season means anything. Is there an award for it?
I'm arguing, if a player is an MVP, he shouldn't play like shit when it's most important. He missed TD passes, and had he been the MVP for his team everyone says he is, he would play valuable and make TD passes he missed when they needed him to instead of choking. Do you need it any clearer? I could go clearer, if you need.

Umm, of course it means something. This is a regular season award. How many times does it need to be said?

Glad to know that players are automatically eliminated from regular season award recognition if they have an off game in the playoffs but this is not surprising because you have never had anything positive to say about Aaron Rodgers.

The award shouldn't be regular season. Regular season means nothing. The Pats going 16-0 means nothing, because they didn't win. Aaron Rodgers feasting on weak opponents means nothing. If he would play well when a game meant something, he's the most valuable player to his team in the league. We saw what the Pack did with Flynn. Eli should have won MVP, he played amazing all year and playoffs. Without him they wouldn't be where they were. The Pack very well could have been.

Well I'm arguing that too lol. The award means nothing anyways, or else Katy Perry wouldn't have been there. It's all publicity.

I get what you're saying, and I agree that they should have playoff awards as well. I think the NHL does that. (I could be wrong, I don't know dick about the NHL.)

I don't like the idea of factoring them both together though. Then, guys like Jared Allen (who was robbed of DPOY) wouldn't even have a chance to win anything.

I agree, but the other part of my point is, the Vikings didn't lose because Allen played bad. They lost despite his amazing play. Allen should still get an award IMO. But the Packers lost because Rodgers was missing TD passes.

You clearly don't know football, and it also seems you didn't watch that game. When the offense isn't doing anything, do you really expect a defense (built to play with a lead, because Rodgers is supposed to put up some points, but didn't) to stop the other team? No one does.
