NFL.com - Adam Vinatieri watched Peyton Manning throw a football recently and the kicker doesn't believe the quarterback is too far away from a return.

Vinatieri told WAXY 790-AM it looked like Manning was on track.

"I haven't watched him the last few weeks, but I did see him at the end of the season," Vinatieri said. "He was developing nicely. Was he quite all the way back yet? No, probably not. Not to his standards.

"But he definitely is not that far off."

If he returns, I think he'll be fine physically (arm strength wise), but the fact he'll have to learn a new offense, new coaches, no chemistry with WR's etc, I don't think he'll ever fully return to his former self.

He's probably the QB in the NFL that could learn offenses and things like that the fastest. And like I said before, a Peyton who's not exactly himself is still a top 5 QB in the NFL.

I agree completely. I don't see a change in scenery being a problem for him.

The guy's been in one offense his whole career. I don't care how knowledgeable he is, there will be time needed.

I don't think it's too farfetched to say he is one of the most knowledgable football players in the league, if not the most.

The offense that the colts ran is probably the most complex offense in the league. So, going to an offense that is less complex won't be as hard imo lol

We have some Peyton Manning news that is actually news.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports that Peyton Manning has been cleared to resume his NFL career.

Colts owner Jim Irsay said in December that he expected Manning would be a Colt if healthy. The presumption of late is that Manning would not be healthy by March. Numerous sources doubted Manning’s ability to ever play again.

The Colts and NFL teams could believe that “cleared” doesn’t mean healthy, but it’s obvious that Manning’s camp wants the news out there that he’s ready to play again. This is the next volley in the back-and-forth between Manning and the Colts.

Mortensen says two doctors cleared Manning to play, including the doctor that performed his surgery.

“If you were my own son, I’d tell [you] to go play,” one doctor told Manning.

That doesn’t mean Manning is ready to play just yet. The key line in Mortesen’s report is as follows:

“The sources said Watkins examined Manning recently in Los Angeles and concluded the stability in his neck would have allowed the quarterback to play this Sunday if the nerves in his arm had regenerated to a satisfactory performance level,” Mort writes.

So the nerves in Manning’s arm likely haven’t necessarily regenerated to a satisfactory performance level yet. Essentially, it’s sounds like it’s safe for Manning to play again, but he’s not able to be effective yet.

“It’s not a safety issue; it’s a performance issue,” one source said.

So Manning is not “back.” This may not even qualify is particularly new information. He doesn’t know yet when or if his arm will perform at an acceptable level. One source told Mort it could take until May. Left unsaid is that it might not happen at all.

That doesn’t make this news insignificant. It’s looking more likely that Manning will wear an NFL uniform again if his health is no longer at risk. Perhaps he’d be willing to play with his arm at 80% of what it used to be.

Life just got harder for the Colts. If they truly want to move on from the Manning era, it will be a tougher sell to their fans to cut Manning now.

When he was a rookie, the offense isn't as it is today. It took him what, close to 10 years to get where he was? I'm not saying he won't be very good, but it's a whole new system, that is different than what he's used to, even if it isn't as complex. I wouldn't be surprised to see the new team adopt his offense anyways.

But the question now is how quickly can the nerves in his arm heal for his performance to improve.

And he had already been practicing so I didn't really see much in Mort's update.

If he's cleared for contact, that's a good update. But he didn't say that so I'm not really paying any attention to ESPN shooting their load over this "breaking news".

I wonder what the possibility is of Peyton getting traded.

Jets, Redskins, 49ers, and Dolphins are those teams being mentioned.

I wonder what the Colts would get for him in a trade?

Nerves in his arm?
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/sports_blog/2012/01/peyton-manning-likely-will-never-play-football-again-sources-say.html

Although the vertebrae in Manning's neck have healed as expected, which allowed him to start throwing again back in December, the same can't be said for the nerves in his arm, according to the sources. They say the velocity on his passes has not improved and possibly never will.

All of which, the sources say, indicates the four-time MVP will probably never play again.

Two league-affiliated doctors with experience in spinal fusion surgery told Cole that it would be too risky for Manning to play again and that it could take as long as a year for Manning to know whether a return is possible.
I didn't make it up, I just spread it around.

- I'm assuming when you tinker with the neck and spinal fluid, you can possibly have issues with nerves in other areas of the body. I'm no doctor, just trying to comprehend what was said in the quote.
