Jacksonville has a new NFL owner and a new head coach. But now it also has new PR problems.

Not only was the hire of coach Mike Mularkey panned by critics Wednesday, Jaguars owner Shahid Khan is in serious damage control mode after his comments about what makes a fan of his team.

Khan explained just what it takes to be a Jaguars fan, in his opinion: "I think I can clarify at this point for me a fan is somebody who is a season ticket holder fan for the Jaguars," said the new owner. "We want to hear from people, we want a huge amount of constructive feedback. We need input, but we need that from fans who are season ticket holders."

So the implication is if you're down on your luck and can't afford season tickets in a state hit hard by the recession, you're not a true fan.

Considering the Jaguars finished 24th in attendance in 2011, that's a pretty small number of supporters.

Khan wouldn't speak on camera to First Coast News about the backlash, but his representative spinned the dis as an "off-the-cuff comment."

Watch the video, even they say that Khan said it was a Joke.

Even if he wasn't joking.. who gives a fuck. Detroit fans should even be allowed to enter conversations about "fans" all their fans now are bandwagon fans that hopped on because they started winning. They never had that many fans before this season.

That's an absurd statement lol.
Nor does it have any relevance to the topic.
Nice try though.

i dont care if we just started winning and more fans hype us now. thats still good for any fan base so that statement is trash. and not to mention we've always had a good amount of fans the winning just posts them in the seats AT the game instead of at home.

Absurd statement?

For years and years Detroit has had fan issues. Don't even play it.

Even though it was an intended joke, he has a point. You can't say shit unless you actually support the team and buy tickets. Jacksonville is made up of alot of College Football fans who feel the need to put their 2 cents in and bash the Jaguars when things are bad, then come back and act like the biggest fans in the world whenever they win.. all by sitting at home on their couch.

& It doesn't have any relevance to the topic? Welcome to SI. 95% Of the shit here doesn't stay on topic.

So.. they're big fans because they sat at home?

Lions have been the laughing stock of the NFL for years.. and have barely had fans. Don't give me the whole.. They have tons of fans bullshit. Not true 1 bit.

Cause you live in Michigan right? lmao.
I can just as easily say the Jags have no fans.

Damn, it's pretty easy to make up dumb statements you can't back up.

we do have tons of fans. like the issue with the pistons right now, our economy plays a huge role and not winning means fans wont go to the games.. they go to bars, or stay home. we win, now we'll go. its like that with any fucking sport, and any fucking team.

Jags are in a smaller market.. and have a stadium bigger than what actually fits the city (Was made for college Football).

Lions have been in like the bottom 5 for every year, until they finally start winning.

Good day sir.

That quote doesn't seem like a joke lol
It was.

It was during the press conference to introduce Mike Mularkey. And they Asked Khan what he was doing with Mike to help the community and what their reaction was. He said he wanted the fans feedback, then that comment and laughed about it while saying it. Jokingly.

Those attendance numbers can be deceiving. The Bengals were ranked 27th in 2010 averaging 60,364 with the stadium being 92.1% full. The stadium only holds 65,535. This year was by far the worst, by far if you look at it and we were winning.... lol.

Some of these teams will never be near the top, there's a lot of stadiums that are just a lot bigger.

Michigan has on of the worst economies in America. Would you really go watch a team that was 0-16 at one point. Just because people didn't show up at the games doesn't mean they don't have the fans. Like Pugz said, it is just like the Pistons. Detroit has a strong ass fan-base in all 4 major sports. I knew/know plenty of Lions fans who watched every game in the 0-16 season, because they are faithful fans. Just because the team was so bad they couldn't fill the stadium with people wanting to waste money to watch garbage on the field doesn't mean we don't have a great fan-base.

Just shut the hell up with this bogus ass argument.
