Recently, Marv Demoff, agent for free agent A-list head coach candidate Jeff Fisher, indicated that he and his client will listen to any reasonable offers as the NFL's coaching carousel spins this offseason. There are already three openings in the league -- the Jacksonville Jaguars, Kansas City Chiefs and Miami Dolphins fired their respective coaches already -- and other teams are rumored to be considering doing the same to their sideline bosses as well.
One of these teams is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a team that appeared to be on the cusp of greatness in 2010, narrowly missing the playoffs on the back of rising young QB Josh Freeman. As the 2011 season has progressed, the team has been revealed as a bit of a fraud, and while the players have repeatedly insisted they are still backing current head coach Raheem Morris, their on-field effort certainly shows otherwise.
Interesting development, then, over the weekend. As Morris, Freeman and the rest prepare to take on the Atlanta Falcons in their final game of the campaign, Rick Stroud of the St. Petersburg Times reports that Fisher was spotted at the team's hotel over the weekend. Fisher was in town to catch his son, Trent, play in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl, but Stroud reports that the coach is also believed to be first on the Bucs' wish list of potential replacements for Morris.
To be clear, it's not yet known whether the Bucs actually spoke to Fisher, but it'd be a remarkable coincidence if he happened to stop by their hotel and not talk to some of the powers-that-be.
Though Tampa would have significant competition for Fisher -- in the event that they do fire Morris -- they also have some good pieces around which to build, including a promising young QB, a high draft pick to secure an impact player and a healthy heaping of cap space for 2012 with which to sign free agents.
