There is a pattern when you look at the Jaguars head coaching candidates. They are young offensive minds.
One of the job requirements for the Jacksonville job seems to be working with quarterback Blaine Gabbert.
“I think a key question you have to ask any potential coach, what are you going to do to develop him?” Jaguars owner Shahid Khan said Wednesday via Tania Ganguli of the Florida Times-Union. “How do you make him the best he can be? Really, I’ve been asking them point blank, ‘Can you work with him?’ And so far everybody says he’s great.”
What else can they say? Despite Gabbert’s woeful rookie season, it’s clear the Jaguars still want to build the team around him. We’d have a hard time believing a head coaching candidate would get the job if he said Gabbert didn’t have a future.
“I think he [Gabbert] is going to be a great quarterback. I think he is our franchise quarterback,” Khan said. “I think he needs development. We want to develop him. We want to give him tools. A dedicated coach. And I think he’s going to be great.”
Doubling down on Gabbert is the easy move because he was a top ten pick. G.M. Gene Smith drafted him. But we think the Jaguars could be throwing good money after bad with Gabbert, not to mention time and energy.
Pocket presence is a tough skill to teach, and plenty of NFL analysts think Gabbert’s struggles in this area could be a fatal flaw.
