As the Colts move closer and closer to clinching the Andrew Luck sweepstakes, some have suggested that the Colts could trade Peyton Manning if they know they’ll be getting Luck-y.

Not so fast, my friend. (Which is now officially Lee Corso’s second best catch phrase.)

Peter King of Sports Illustrated reported during Football Night in America that Manning’s $28 million option bonus is due before the start of the 2012 league year. Since no trades can happen until after the 2012 league year begins, the Colts won’t be able to trade Manning before the $28 million comes due.

And that means the Colts will be less likely to trade him after paying him another $28 million.

Of course, Manning could give the Colts some relief by agreeing to postpone the due date, if only by a few days. But here’s the thing. What’s in it for Manning? If there’s a team that he’d like to play for and if that team is willing to pay him $28 million to walk through the door, why tie his new team’s hands by forcing the new team to give up two first-round picks or more to the Colts? Those picks could be used to help improve Manning’s new team.

Thus, it’s in Manning’s best interests, if he’s going to leave Indy, to refuse to change the date and force his release.

Regardless of how it works out, it’ll be one of the most compelling stories of the offseason.

Irsay: Manning, Rookie Could Co-Exist In 2012

NFL.com - Colts owner Jim Irsay believes that Peyton Manning and a possible rookie quarterback could co-exist on the team's roster next season.

Irsay, a constant Tweeter, opened up about the subject on his Twitter feed Sunday.

"Yea I saw [USC quarterback Matt] Barkley n [Stanford QB Andrew] Luck last nite, and there's others with big time potential," Irsay tweeted. "but we want 18 back under center soon/18 now-2012Class future."

Manning has missed the entire season following his third neck surgery in two years. Indianapolis is winless and in line to earn the first overall pick in April's 2012 NFL Draft.

"It's very possible 18 back at full strength n we take future QB high in draft," Irsay wrote. "it's not necessarily 1 or the other...stay tuned4 wild ride!"

I dunno, I could see them not getting an offer they really want...but honestly I think they will keep Payton around. Who better to work out with Luck? Manning is a great QB and if he still has game left, they'll keep him.

As long as Dan Snyder is an owner, there will be no problem if/when Indy wants to move Manning.

Colts have no reason to trade Peyton. He'll teach Luck for 2 or 3 years, similar to Favre/Rodgers.

Just amazes me, they can't win a damn game without Peyton Manning under center and the media just assumes they're ready to toss him to the curb next year.

It's too much money invested into QBs, one has to go. Luck or Manning.

Not at all. Rodgers was taken as a project on a good team after he slipped to the 20s.

Similar scenario with higher upside.

You can't just trade Peyton Manning, the $$ is too much. And you know how valuable he is to that team. They cant win without him, and there's no guarantee Luck will be this incredible QB everyone thinks he will be. if they can find a way to carry both for 2 years it'll work.

Or you trade the pick to improve the team in other areas.
