After a brief turn with the Connecticut Whale in the American Hockey League, Avery cleared re-entry waivers at noon Tuesday and was recalled by the New York Rangers. He is expected to join his teammates at practice in Greenburgh, N.Y., on Wednesday and will be available for Thursday's game against Anaheim at Madison Square Garden.

Avery was initially waived by the Rangers in their final round of preseason cuts.

At the time, Rangers coach John Tortorella said, "I think we have better players than Sean Avery, plain and simple. … I wish him good luck in everything, but we've gone by that. I think we're a better club. The players that are here are better than Sean Avery."

The Rangers summoned for Avery on Monday because, as Tortorella said, Mike Rupp's nagging knee injury has turned into a long-term concern. Avery, who had 1 goal and seven penalty minutes in two games with the Whale, could immediately move into a fourth-line role if Tortorella elects to play him.

"This is the right decision," Tortorella said Monday prior to the Rangers 5-2 win over San Jose. "It's the right hockey decision now and it was the right hockey decision when we sent Sean down. That's where it's at."

Tortorella stopped short of saying he would play Avery on Thursday, especially after the way the Rangers responded to win Monday's game.

"I'm not force-feeding anything," Tortorella said after the game. "If I look at the tape and think guys have done their job, you stay with your team. I just don't know what the lineup's going to be our next game. We'll see how it all works out."
