The return of Sidney Crosby to game action could be another step closer to fruition Tuesday.

According to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Crosby will meet with his medical team Tuesday morning to determine if he's ready for contact.

Leading that team will be Michael Collins, a clinical neuropsychologist who heads the UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program. It's unknown if Ted Carrick, a Florida-based chiropractor who specializes in neurological treatment and who appeared with Crosby and Collins at a press conference last month, will be part of Tuesday's exam.

Crosby has not missed a practice since the start of training camp Sept. 17, and traveled with the team on its three-game season-opening trip to Western Canada, but has yet to be involved in any contact drills.

Being cleared for contact in practice is the final step before Crosby is ready to play in a game. He hasn't played since Jan. 5, when he was diagnosed with a concussion.

Regardless of the opinion Crosby receives, he will not play in Tuesday's home opener against the Florida Panthers (7:30 p.m., Versus, TSN2). The Panthers game starts a three-game homestand that includes games against the Washington Capitals on Thursday and the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday.

The Pens also could be without center Evgeni Malkin against the Panthers. Malkin sat out Sunday's game against the Edmonton Oilers with a lower-body injury.

Would be great news for hockey if he does get cleared. One more step to returning finally.

Damn, I've never heard of a concussion being that bad.
I agree though, certainly good news for hockey.

Really? A lot of players have been out longer than Crosby has with a concussion and have had their careers ended.
In the NHL?
Never been an avid fan of the NHL, just a casual fan.
I guess it wouldn't surprise me though.
