The NBA and NBPA broke for the weekend on Saturday after an eight hour bargaining session that followed a four-hour meeting on Friday.

No agreement is in place, but the sides have moved "closer" to a compromise on system issues, commissioner David Stern said.

At the suggestion of Billy Hunter, the two sides "decoupled" the issues of the split of revenues and the system that would go with it, attempting to "break down the mountain into separate pieces," NBPA Derek Fisher said.

"We're not near anything," Stern said. "But wherever that is, we're closer than we were before."

Hunter characterized the two sides as being "miles apart" even on the system issues that separate them as the owners and league negotiators try to incorporate system changes they feel "entitled to," Hunter said, by virtue of dropping their insistence on a hard team salary cap.

Stern said no announcement regarding further preseason games being canceled would be made Monday.

Well, sounds like they're really starting to work hard on getting a deal done. Any progress is a major success. We'll miss some regular season games it's looking like, but not as many as was originally though. Next session set for Monday. Very excited to see these talks continue every other day or so from this point until a deal is reached.

Thoughts?

I just hope the players go back home to their several million dollar houses, in their several million dollar cars, with their few thousand dollar outfits and accessories and realize, they make enough. Then they take like 49% or something like that of the income.

They take 53% of the income right now.

Some interesting comments from Ben Gordon:

Gordon was in New York for previous negotiating sessions and said until the past few days, he could tell the owners weren't serious about making a deal and were looking forward to the eventual outcome.

"It just seemed scripted, and they were going through the motions," said Gordon, calling it a valuable learning experience. "Sitting there in front of them you could tell they weren't focused on getting a deal. I still don't know the purpose of those meetings."
He sat in on labor negotiations late last month that Gordon on Tuesday described as a "waste of time."

And the Pistons' shooting guard thinks it's only a matter of time before more games are canceled.

"I think there will be more games missed," Gordon said when reached by phone as he was driving to Chicago. "I expect it might be a year or two. I realized that when I was listening to both sides during the negotiations. I think there will be a lot of games missed and more money is going to go down the drain.

Or how they will pay for all that + their families (and god knows some of them probably owe money in other areas) with no income.

Home insurance as well. Most of them have pretty lavish homes.

just remember, the players would split their 50 with 500 players and the owners split their 50 with 30 people

why cant they just find a medium?

NBA players nearly make more on average, then MLB and NFL players combined. Everyone should be on the owners side, but the media & large networks (ESPN) will push the players agenda because they want good relationships and constant interviews/inside access from the players.
