The owners and players met on Tuesday for several hours and came away sounding less optimistic about a deal than they did last week.

Billy Hunter said that there was no progress, with the owners declining to compromise from their position. He also said that no new meetings are scheduled.

"We've advised (players) they may have to sit out half the season before we get a deal," said Hunter.

Derek Fisher said the players remain committed to negotiations.

"We're not walking way from the table," said Fisher.

Hunter says union came away "pessimistic and discouraged" by the proposal from the owners.

Owners and players initially found reason for optimism during Tuesday's meetings. Commissioner David Stern and Peter Holt, the head of the owners' executive committee, felt that the players' proposal to take 52 or 53 percent of basketball-related income, compared to 57 under the previous agreement, was basically fair, sources said.

Owners were seriously considering coming off of their demand for a salary freeze and would allow players' future earnings to be tied into the league's revenue growth, a critical point for players. The owners also were willing to allow the players to maintain their current salaries, without rollbacks, sources said.

But when the owners left the players to meet among themselves for around three hours, Cleveland's Dan Gilbert and Phoenix's Robert Sarver expressed their dissatisfaction with many of the points, sources said. The sources said that the Knicks' James Dolan and the Lakers' Jerry Buss were visibly annoyed by the hardline demands of Gilbert and Sarver.

Not shocking with the amount of money Dan Gilbert loses every year with the Cavs, even when he had LeBron.

But I find it hard to believe only two owners were against it. Most of the small market guys had to be against it, and all of Broussard's connections involve LeBron, so they just pinned it on Gilbert.

Owners have a consensus, according to sources, that they want to have an amnesty clause upon completion of a new collective bargaining agreement.

Unlike the previous agreement in 2005, teams would not have the salary count against the cap.

The clause was widely nicknamed as 'The Allan Houston Rule' even though the Knicks ultimately didn't use the provision upon him.

I think they get paid still but the contract is just removed from their salary going towards the CAP.

Not good news at all. From the sounds of things, both sides really dug into their demands and weren't willing to back off at all. The players are being way too greedy, as are the owners. They should just agree to split everything at 50% and just leave it there. Players lowest offer right now is 54%, and the owners want it to be more like 43%. This is just pathetic. Hopefully they get a deal done, but it does look like we'll lose some regular season games unless a deal is done by October 2nd.

NEW YORK – For the first time in two years of labor talks, NBA owners made a modest push from their rigid stance on implementing a hard salary cap, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

The owners proposed at Tuesday’s negotiating session an idea similar to the current system that allows teams to pay a luxury tax for going over the cap. Only, now there would be ultra-punitive measures against higher-spending teams. The current system has teams pay a dollar-for-dollar tax for exceeding the cap.
