ESPN.com - Head coach Jim Harbaugh says Alex Smith has created some "separation" in the competition with rookie Colin Kaepernick for San Francisco's starting QB job, according to an ESPN.com report on Tuesday.

Smith has been sharp for two straight days of practice, connecting with a handful of different receivers on deep balls. All along, he has been the favorite to begin the year as the starter.

That AND Kap threw 2 INTs.

The O-line was horrible.

5 seasons later, the #1 draft pick is beating out the starting job against a raw rookie QB.
Good work Alex lol.

It's like he's destined to be their starter. No matter what happens, what you hear from fans, he's the starter. There was the period where he wasn't, once in awhile, but in the end here he is. Like a magnet lol.

I do like Kaepernick though, but he has some work to do.

But now he's on a 1 year deal, and if he doesn't make big strides this season, my gut is telling me he is gone.

Definetly looked like he was pulling away against the Saints.

He definitely will be, if they struggle this year, they will definitely be looking at a QB in next years draft and we all know Harbaugh would love to have Andrew Luck...

They'll both see time during the season, but why is it a surprise Alex will start? We all know he will...
