In his eight years playing for the Jaguars, veteran cornerback Rashean Mathis has seen several iterations of Jacksonville's defense.

He's excited about the one that's been forming this week.

"Me and Daryl [Smith] was talking about it, and me and [Aaron] Kampman as well," Mathis said. "We're making moves to allow this team to get better. Instantly. It's a lot of excitement going on. That's pretty much the only way you can look at it right now. We're doing what it takes to win ballgames."

Last season the Jaguars defense gave up a franchise record 419 points. After the draft the Jaguars front office said they would be active in free agency finding upgrades to their defense.

They did. The Jaguars agreed to a six-year deal with former Bills linebacker Paul Posluszny worth $45 million with $15 million in guarantees and a five-year deal with linebacker Clint Session worth $29 million with $11.5 million in guarantees.

Today the Jaguars agreed to a five-year deal with strong safety Dawan Landry, the terms of which were not immediately available.

"He's used to talking," Mathis said of Landry. "He has Ed Reed back there who probably talks more than anybody besides Ray Lewis. So it's a plus. It's definitely a plus. I'm excited. Like I said, we all are. We all are. For all the moves that we're making, it's putting a smile on a lot of guys' faces."
