Tomas Kaberle has signed a three-year, $12.75 million deal to play for the Carolina Hurricanes.

Kaberle had been the longest tenured member of the Toronto Maple Leafs, before being dealt at the trade deadline to the Boston Bruins. He helped Boston win their first Stanley Cup since 1971-72.

"Tomas is one of the top puck-moving defencemen in the NHL and (a) power-play specialist," Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford said in a release. "He has had a good career and is now a Stanley Cup champion. We welcome him to Carolina and look forward to his contributions to the Hurricanes."

He had four goals and 43 assists between the two teams last season, and played all 82 games.

Boston general manager Peter Chiarelli told the Canadian Press that the team spoke to Kaberle's agent, but were not able to reach common ground on a new deal.

"We seized the opportunity," Chiarelli said. "We do wish Tomas well. He provided us with something we greatly needed in the Stanley Cup drive and he's got a good contract with a good team now."

The 33-year-old from the Czech Republic has 84 goals and 445 assists in 902 career games.

I like this for the Canes. They've got a much more solid core of D now and at a very good deal IMO

Yeah, it's a pretty good deal.. I am not a big Kab fan, think he disappears in the big games, but he's gonna give them some defensive support for sure.
