Lakers backup guard Shannon Brown informed the team Thursday that he was exercising his option to terminate the final year of his contract to become an unrestricted free agent.

"We made the best decision for me and everybody around me," Brown said in a telephone interview. "It's an interesting time to do this because of the lockout, but I think this is the best thing for me to do right now."

"I haven't ruled out the Lakers," Brown said. "I don't know if they will rule me out. I'm staying open."

Hornets were interested in him last year, it was between the Lakers and us if I remember correctly.

BKS probably won't like this, but I think Brown is a realistic option for the Bulls as a SG without a big financial commitment. Would not surprise me if he went there.

Ewww... Brown is so overrated. I'd rather start Ronnie Brewer or even Keith Bogans again.

Rip hit the nail on the head.

I'm starting to warm up to Vince Carter, if we can't get O.J. Mayo/J.R. Smith. :D

I've never thought Shannon Brown was anything more than an energy guy off the bench.

There's a reason he never played in Cleveland/Chicago, he just isn't that good.

Shannon Brown should have been the starting PG

Fisher and Blake< the cannon

But its whatever now. He can take his talents elsewhere haha

Go Chicago

I'll say this-- Brown is still fairly young at 25. Was he overexposed with the Lakers? Absolutely. But I do think he still has one or two years of upward potential left to expand his game, which is more than you can say about other options in the market like Vince Carter. And he did, after all, play in Phil Jackson's system, which wasn't necessarily conducive to his skillset. At the end of the day, he showed flashes of brilliance and provides an athletic playstyle that teams are looking for nowadays. This is why teams will look at him.

I'm definitely not the person to be asked to sing Brown's praises considering his mediocre play here with the Lakers, but I do not think he is someone to overlook either-- he has the talent to be a serviceable starter and could prove to be a high reward pickup.

Absolutely not. Watching Derek Fisher get burned by Chris Paul was frustrating to say the least, but watching Shannon Brown-esque shot selection from my lead guard all season long would bring the pain of several kicks to the crotch. The world would end and children would cry (in that order) if Shannon Brown were PG because the basketball gods would not allow such a thing.

If not on the Lakers, I'd like to see who picks up Shannon
