The Vancouver Canucks have traded defenceman Christian Ehrhoff's negotiating rights to the New York Islanders in exchange for a 4th round pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.

Ehrhoff is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on Friday. The Islanders will have exclusive negotiation rights with the German veteran until then.

Sources say Ehrhoff was offered the same deal blueliner Kevin Bieksa received on Monday - a new five-year, $23 million contract that includes a no-trade clause.

The 28-year-old was acquired by the Canucks from San Jose prior to the 2009-10 season. In two years with Vancouver, he posted back-to-back 14-goal seasons, the two best totals of his seven-year career.

He finished with a career-high 50 points last season and has has 53 goals and 173 assists in 500 career NHL games.
I don't think he'll sign with the Islanders

Under normal circumstances, I agree but, with the cap boost and teams like the Islanders having to hit the floor, $6M might change his mind.

True, dud wants to get paid badly. I would never pay 6 mil for a guy who's soft and doesn't show up in the playoffs though lol.

lol tell me about it but I don't think it would be so terrible for the Islanders. He'd be overpaid as hell but they have the room. Plus it couldn't hurt in trying to convince some other players to play for them.

Just don't throw a Campbell contract at him, or the Islanders will be screwed in a couple of years with the young talent they have.

Haha. Yeah ^. 7.1 million over 8 years is brutal. I don't know what the Blackhawks were thinking with that contract. Way too long term, and at a high amount too.

Not sure he wants to play there but I'm sure he'd play for the right amount of money.

After acquiring the negotiating rights to Canucks defenseman Christian Ehrhoff last night, the Islanders do not appear to be able to sign the impending unrestricted free agent.

Talks between Ehrhoff and the Islanders broke down this afternoon and, according to two people familiar with the situation, GM Garth Snow sent out a mass email gauging interest from other teams.

The Buffalo Sabres have acquired the negotiating rights to defenceman Christian Ehrhoff from the New York Islanders in exchange for a fourth-round selection in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.

Ehrhoff, who is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on Friday, had his negotiating rights traded from the Vancouver Canucks to the Islanders in exchange for a 4th round pick on Tuesday but a deal could not be struck.

The Moers, Germany native tied his career-high for goals and set career-high numbers in assists and points last season. During the Canucks' run to the Stanley Cup Final, Ehrhoff played in 23 games, scoring two goals and 10 assists.

Ehrhoff represented his home country at the past two Winter Olympic Games.
