Despite suffering a season-ending knee injury in March, New Orleans Hornets power forward David West said he will opt out of the final season of his contract this week and become a free agent.

"We just felt like this is the best thing for me, to go forward, and I made the decision based on where I was since the the knee (surgery) and all those other things and I felt it was the right time for me to make a good decision," West told the (New Orleans) Times-Picayune on Monday.

As a Hornets fan, I knew this was coming. So I'm not shocked one bit. I'd say the chances of him resigning are slim to none.

Nice knowing you DWest...

Yeah, I guess it must be a tough reality for a Hornets fan but this was easy to see coming.

I don't know why he would opt out. He has no idea what the next salary cap/structure will be and who will have cap to sign him. Bizarre move.

Most of us knew it was coming, of course there were the few who are like "OMG I CANT BELIEVE HIM" but the majority weren't the least bit shocked.

I'm an insider on the hornets forum and the site owner called this like a week ago.

Whoa, definitely a shocker imo. He's one of those guys I expected to stay there as long as CP was there
