um, winning a championship or contending for one might outweigh money. like i said, he seems like a smart dude and hes already loaded. hes still young-ish, knees can improve slightly with a better staff, possibly. if they offer you a buyout, thats cash upfront. making him richer. leave, sign a new contract, chase rings.

plus the team seems to be treating him like an old crippled man. i wouldnt wanna be with that team anymore.

Even if Roy were on his knees (no pun intended) begging for one, Portland can't buy him out. You cannot shorten contracts in the NBA; the only semi-practical way to get rid of a player investment is by putting him on waivers. Doing that, however, doesn't eliminate the Blazers' financial commitments-- his salary still counts against the Blazers cap unless someone signs him as a FA and his signing salary is discounted from their debts. Even then, unless a team picks him up for a max contract deal (which will never happen), Portland still ends up owing a significant of money. We can argue about Roy's market value-- my gut feeling says he's worth at most a few millions upwards the MLE (a rather generous figure)-- but its low enough to mean putting him on waivers isn't a viable financial option for his current team. Why ask for something that is impossible to have done and lowers your market value? Long story short-- Roy stays in Portland, and is going to wait years, whether he likes it or not, to even have the opportunity to demand a move to another city.

He is already on a rather young playoff contender; teams with cap that might be interested will more likely be worse talent-wise. More importantly, the injury fears Portland has will follow him to that destination, too. The only difference is, for that team, he won't be treated like a marquis player because he won't be compensated like one. Contenders like Chicago, additionally, who would want him can only offer at most the MLE-- something POR is aware of, and constitute another reason why POR won't let him go.

In POR's defense, outside of his amazing playoff game, he has been an old crippled man. Unfortunately for him, he signed that max contract and limited his options for better and for worse. Now he has to deal with it.

Yep, that's about the time you want him to be playing. Anyway why he can't start, he's become a liability on defense because of his knee. He's better off coming off the bench as a scoring spark rather than starting.

Yeah that too. I've said this in other threads but again you can't expect performances like that on a consistent basis, he'll have some games where he'll do well but he won't be consistent by any means, he showed that during the regular season and in the playoffs.

he still has some magic

but like me and dove are saying, he's better off the bench as a spark because he can only play limited minutes. if he's playing well, you leave him in to finish the game and then once in a while you get some magic like that game vs dallas (maybe not that much magic, but he's always been clutch. always)

Yeah it depresses me talking about it, not just because my team is all fucked up now but for his sake. He goes from being an allstar and with tons of potential to this in just 1 year.

I've been saying this for a long time but I swear just by putting on a Blazer uniform automatically fucks your knees up.
