A source familiar with the situation said Thursday that Portland figures it must deal with Brandon Roy's future if it's truly going to rejoin the league's contenders. Retirement for Roy is among the options they're considering.

The Blazers know they hold the distinction of being the only team in the Western Conference that hasn't won a first-round playoff series in the past 10 years. So they're eager and acting with urgency.

There are only three viable options when it comes to Roy's future: A) figure out where he fits and play him; B) set him free with the Amnesty Clause; or C) lure him into retirement.

I don't see them asking him to retire either, but I'm sure the Blazers are privately crossing their fingers he does. This is the same team that drafted Greg Oden and once rostered Jermaine O'Neal, mind you-- they know full well the ability for knee injuries to derail promising careers. Investing a large contract on a player who in all likelihood will have prolonged stints on the IR in an uncertain economic future is a rather large risk to take nowadays. Luckily for them, if the new CBA gives amnesty to bad contracts, Roy would probably be the player released.

No, I think he knows better than anyone he has vulnerable knees too. I doubt he would leave a guaranteed max contract on the table because of pride. His team won't ask him to retire, but these comments are really just business for you-- health makes him a risky investment, and he will be treated like one for the remainder of his contract.

I still don't understand the incentive in asking for a buyout if that happens, though. He's guaranteed a max deal, which, by this time next year, won't even be tendered to NBA players for the foreseeable future. It is the cushiest financial situation you could have in the league right now. If Roy denies retirement, its not like Portland is going to sit him unconditionally, either-- they can't justify icing that big of an investment.

His best move is to stay where he is, get paid, remain healthy, and most importantly, stay quiet.
