No matter what Memphis Grizzlies owner Michael Heisley says, teams are going to continue to make trade offers for Rudy Gay. And for a team like the Cleveland Cavaliers, who have long coveted the fifth-year swingman, they’re going to keep trying. According to Jonathan Givony of DraftExpress, that persistence came in the form of an offer that would have sent Cleveland’s $14.5 million trade exception (acquired in the LeBron James sign-and-trade to Miami) and the No. 4 pick to Memphis for Gay.

As you can imagine, the Grizzlies weren’t interested.

We all know that Memphis needs to free up some money this summer in order to re-sign free agent Marc Gasol, but basically swapping the No. 4 pick straight-up for Gay doesn’t make sense in terms of talent. Financially, Gay is one year into a maximum contract that will pay him nearly $69 million over the next four years, but he’s also just 24 years old and on the brink of becoming an All-Star. Will Gay be traded this summer? Perhaps. But know that Memphis will need much more in return before pulling the trigger.

This would have been huge for the Cavs haha

Would have been horrible for the Grizzlies...but if it was the #1 pick, I think Derrick Williams would be nice, he can play the 3 or 4 and has a lot of upside.

what? lol. no. theyll resign mayo and be in the hole for a lot of money, plus gasol. this would have given them more cap flexibility. and that 4th pick would have let them draft for depth. they played better without rudy this second half and into the playoffs.

stupid for not taking this deal, dumb as hell. it would have been better for the cavs though. feel bad for them. this would have been nice.

If Gay was on that team during when he was out, they probably would have done better. Gay is a big time scorer for them.

I think the Cavs should just go ahead and put everything on the table and trade the 4th pick for a first next season. Trade it to a bad team and hope for a like top 5 pick or something. Anthony Miller, Harrison Barnes, Jared Sullinger, Perry Jones, Quincy Miller, James McAdoo, etc. I'd rather any of those guys than someone you'll get at 4 this year. God, if people come out next year the draft will be LOADED. I mean check out nbadraft.net, they have Teague at 9, Rivers at 11, Gilchrist at 12. That's just insane and shows the talent that could be in next years draft.

Hell I may take any of those three guys over someone you'll get at 4.
