Lakers' Bynum suspended five games for hit on Barea

By Official Release
Posted May 10 2011 6:58PM

NEW YORK -- Andrew Bynum of the Los Angeles Lakers has been suspended without pay for five games for making unnecessary and excessive contact with J.J. Barea of the Dallas Mavericks while he was in mid-air and knocking him to the floor, it was announced today by Stu Jackson, NBA Executive Vice President, Basketball Operations. Bynum has also been fined $25,000 for removing his jersey and the manner in which he left the court.

The incident, in which Bynum was assessed a Flagrant Foul Two and ejected from the game, occurred with 8:21 remaining in the fourth quarter of the Lakers' 122-86 loss to the Dallas Mavericks in Game 4 of the Western Conference Semifinals at American Airlines Center.

Bynum will be suspended for the first five games of the 2011-12 NBA regular season for which he is eligible and physically able to play
He deserves it.

He deserves a lot more than 5 games...5 games means nothing.

5 games seems about right to me. Anything more would have probably been excessive.

In an 82 game season, 5 games is probably the right amount.

A 5 game suspension means nothing...thats like a slap to the back of the hand...same with that weak fine.

The NBA should of sent a message to the players by making it a big fine and long suspension.

Players only get about 2 games for actually fighting during a game...throwing punches, etc.

Artest got only one game for basically clothes-lining Barea. Bynum threw out an elbow, and got ejected. It was a dirty play, and he got a fair punishment. I don't think he deserved more than 5 games. If you believe that he did, then you probably just have a general hatred towards the Lakers.

But look at the fights...those are 10x not as bad as what Bynum did. JJB could have been seriously hurt easily on that. All the fights in the NBA are weak and are usually completely done after just 1 punch.

Dude you need to watch that replay more than...that was a VICIOUS elbow...not "just and elbow"

What about that says 5 games to you? That's about as cheap and dirty as you can get. That goes beyond just trying to stop a guy and mid air and giving him a hard foul so he doesn't get the basket, that's intentionally trying to hurt someone.

Agree with Nolan...

Even if Bynum was my favorite player and I loved the Lakers, I would EASILY see that is worth more than 5 games.

I never said it was "just an elbow". I saw the replay several times. When I saw it happen live, I immediately knew it was a dirty play, and I immediately called out Bynum for being a bitch because of it... but it's not something that warrants a heftier punishment. It is right on par with what usually gets handed out for similar actions.

It's not the first time that he's done that too, he made no play for the ball on a Gerald Wallace drive and seriously injured him:

Bynum just looked like a immature little child walking off the court. The entire thing showed just who he really is. That's just being a sore loser and you would think professionals would be above that. He has some serious growing up to do and stop being a little bitch.
