Last night in Utah was a mixed bag for the New Orleans Hornets. They gutted out a tough overtime win, in thrilling — at times surreal – fashion, but may have lost their second-best player for the remainder of the season in the process.

On a hard, driving left-handed dunk late in the fourth quarter to tie the game, David West came down awkwardly on his left knee. He left the court in a wheelchair.

The Times-Picayune has the details:

West sustained what is being termed as “left knee trauma” on a driving slam dunk with 22.5 to go in regulation. X-rays were negative, but an MRI is scheduled for today in Phoenix, where the Hornets play the Suns on Friday night.

West was laid out on a training table in the dressing room, his knee encased in ice, in obvious pain, his face covered by a towel. A large immobilizing splint and a pair of crutches were brought into the locker room.

UPDATE: The Times-Picayune reports that today’s MRI revealed a torn left ACL and DWest will be out for season.

Via Slam. Tough loss for the Hornets

If he doesn't get as big of a contract as he was suppose to, he'd be a great pick up for a lesser price.. He's always gonna have that nice jumper.

To add insult to injury, he should have been on the line for a and one opportunity, but the refs blew that one.

Silver lining, atleast we get to see what Carl Landry can do.

If there was a steal in this years trade deadline, it was this deal. The kid is going to do big things for NO.

I'd agree with that. I love Marcus to death, but he's more of a fans player than a coaches player.

Terrible news. It will be terrible for the Hornets to move past the first round without their second best player. Hopefully, Landry steps up

Carl was thriving under Adelman last year. Had we not traded him he'd have been starting for Houston all year this year and may have made it to the all-star game. Sacramento fucking abused what we'd done with him and tried to tell their Kings fans that Demarcus Cousins and whoever that other power forward were better than Landry. That's LOLworthy right there.

To be honest, when I heard David was out my thought wasn't "oh no! how are we going to replace David in the lineup?" but it was "how are we going to replace Carl off the bench?"

He gives us something not a ton of teams have coming off their bench, and that's a starting caliber player. In fact, he isn't that far behind David in terms of overall player. He doesn't have the midrange shot, and isn't as abusive in the post, but his defense is better, he brings more injury, is more explosive, can block shots, etc etc.

He is a better leaper, that's for sure. He throws down some nasty jams when he gets the chance. He makes a lot of energy plays, which are irreplaceable. Not saying West doesn't make those plays, but he's just not as quick with his feet as Carl is. David West is one of the most underrated players in basketball, but so is Carl Landry. This could be an interesting situation at the end of the season, because I think both players' contracts are up. Is that so? I'm not so sure about West, but I believe Carl's in the final year of a 3 year deal.

David still has one year, but before the injury it was pretty much a foregone conclusion that he'd opt out and look for a bigger deal from the Hornets or test the market. Who knows now.

Either way, Landry's on the market as soon as a new CBA is reached. I hope Morey pursues him. We could use him back.

I'd be shocked if he doesn't come back to New Orleans. I know he wants to come back, and I know we want him back.

I expect something to get done.

And I honestly can't see him wanting back in Houston. Not after what they did to him last year. I'm still venomous over that one.

What did they do? Didn't they trade him for Kevin Martin?
