Charlotte Observer - The Panthers claim they haven't finished evaluating prospects, but with the NFL Draft just weeks away the Charlotte Observer surveyed the landscape.

Carolina is expected to bring in quarterbacks Cam Newton, Blaine Gabbert and Ryan Mallett in the next week or so.

The Observer believes that currently, the Panthers are leaning towards taking Gabbert with the first overall pick.

"Maybe it was a case - like figure skating judges - of saving the best marks (or remarks, in this case) for last," wrote Joseph Person. "But [Ron] Rivera seemed to rave about Gabbert, whom team officials worked out and met with last weekend in Missouri before Rivera attended the owners meetings.

"Rivera mentioned Gabbert's size, arm, touch and footwork, but said he was most impressed with Gabbert's "presence." When coaches start talking like that, it usually means they like the whole package."

It's going to be Newton or Gabbert for the first overall selection. Schefter came out and said he thinks it'll be Newton, and yes, he's been wrong before but he's usually pretty trusted.

I believe it'll be Cam, and I have for a month or so now.

Gabbert is certainty the safer pick, but why wouldn't they go defense? Rivera is a defensive coach, they've always been a defensive team, and probably seven or more of the drafts top ten guys are on the defensive side. Why not look at a guy like Peterson, Dareus, Bowers, etc etc. Then you can hope for a QB like Luck or Barkley next season.

New coaching staff usually means new QB. Nobody on the Panthers staff has any ties to Clausen anymore, so they will probably look to have their guy at QB. Plus, Clausen just isn't a leader.

I just don't really see any QB out there this year worth the 1st pick.

Then again, the Panthers can waste their pick on a QB if they want, me being a Saints fan and all...

Nobody does..

But these teams need leaders, and they don't want to wait. Every single year who is taken among the top of the Draft? The Quarterbacks. They rise to the top, and they get selected, and it's as simple as that.
