When rumors surfaced yesterday of Patriots safety Brandon Meriweather's involvement in a shooting in Apopka, Fla. two weeks ago, I spoke with the Public Information Officer in the Orange County (Fla.) Sheriff's office, who had no record of Meriweather being connected to any crime. The person did mentioned she'd been getting a lot of calls about it. Perhaps we know why. A report by Deadspin.com this morning has an on-the-record account from a lawyer for two alleged victims, saying Meriweather shot his two clients. John Morgan, attorney for the alleged victims, told the website that Meriweather fired at the men outside a house party after one of Meriweather's friends got beat up. "That's when Meriweather allegedly pulled out his gun and fired at the brother," the report says, "grazing the man's face and hitting the other victim in the head, according to Morgan. 'He's extremely lucky to be alive,' Morgan said." The report says these are allegations, and the fact that police had no record of it yesterday was at least interesting. Representatives for Meriweather did not immediately respond to an email or call. Meriweather did not respond to an email. If it's true, it is not the first time he's been involved in an incident that does not reflect well on him. There was the helmet-to-helmet shots on Todd Heap this season, and an involvement in a gun incident in 2006 while at Miami.

Wow. Is it real? Did it happen? Was it someone else named Meriweather? We have no idea. But definitely something to keep an eye on.
