All depends on what you're offered. There are always teams that will overpay for a top pick, so personally I would listen to offers, but not move it for the sake of moving it.

With no time frame set for the return of Penguins captain Sidney Crosby and a knee injury that will likely see Evgeni Malkin miss the rest of the season, Pittsburgh general manager Ray Shero needs a Top 6 forward - preferably a centre.

Because of long term injury relief, cap space is no longer a problem. However, if Shero hopes to lure players like Stephen Weiss from the Florida Panthers or pry a talented young forward like Devin Setoguchi from the San Jose Sharks (as examples), he will need to present a package of assets containing either a combination of a young roster player and high ranking draft pick, or a top prospect and draft picks.

In San Jose's case, assuming Sharks GM Doug Wilson is willing to consider moving Setoguchi, a young defenceman such as 25-year-old Alex Goligoski may have to be include

New Jersey Devils centre Jason Arnott will also draw interest for teams needing help up the middle

The Bruins have an interest in a replacement centre, but feel confident Blake Wheeler can fill that void.

It seems unlikely the Dallas Stars' ownership situation will sort itself out anytime soon. That uncertainty makes it almost impossible for Brad Richards to negotiate an extension with the Stars.

Richards and his agent Pat Morris have an excellent relationship with Stars general manager Joe Nieuwendyk and will continue to listen to updates on ownership possibilities, while also allowing Dallas to dictate the pace and direction the organization wants to go with the star centre.

An in-season trade is highly unlikely. However, if presented, Richards would consider his options provided enough time was given to weigh the possibilities of making the move - especially if the proposal were to include a contract extension.

Another scenario could see Richards turn down such an opportunity and finish the season in Dallas hopeful that ownership solidifies in time for him to comfortably re-sign with the Stars.

This would have to happen before the NHL Entry Draft in June, the next logical hot-spot for trade prior to Richards cruising into unrestricted free agency on July 1.

There is no doubt Stars management wants to keep their top scorer and they have expressed this desire, but negotiating the term and dollars is very difficult to do while ownership remains in question.

Komisarek cap hit is $4.1M for 3 years past this one. The Carolina Hurricanes have a HUGE interest in Komisarek and it is believed it will only take a 2nd round pick and prospect for a trade to happen. Burke will wait till the 12th hour of trade deadline day but don't be surprised if Komisarek ends up as a Hurricane.

Would be huge if we we're able to move Komisarek. Would take money off the blueline to spend up front in the offseason.

This is the point in the season where teams like the Canes & Thrashers start to fall apart...and their front offices make deals to help hold onto hope of that playoff spot. These deals help in the short-term but are obviously longterm errors. Komisarek would weigh the Canes down within 2 years but making the playoffs goes a long way for Carolina. Staal is in his prime, Ward is in his prime, and Carolina needs to strengthen the blueline and capitalize NOW.

But, at least imo, Komisarek does NOT do that. He's not going to keep them afloat in the playoff race and then his albatross contract is going to hamper them.

Maybe its fueled by my extreme dislike for him (and that's putting it likely) but it makes zero sense to me.

Edmonton Oilers GM Steve Tambellini is believed to be very active on the trade front, multiple sources told TFP late Tuesday evening.

The Oilers are vigorously pursuing a young, top-tier defenseman and have interest in Atlanta Thrashers rearguard Zach Bogosian, Chicago Blackhawks star Brent Seabrook, and New York Rangers blueliner Michael Del Zotto.

It was reported earlier today that the Oilers and Thrashers had been discussing a deal involving Bogosian, however TSN's Bob McKenzie said "someone is going to knock off Thrasher general manager Rick Dudley's socks to make it happen."
With a plethora of young talent, Tambellini is willing to part with one of his younger stars to complete a deal for a player under 25, indicated a league executive.

The Oilers have been attracting a lot of interest in veteran forwards Ales Hemsky, 26, and Dustin Penner, 27, and Tambellini is asking for a stud defenseman as part of a package.

For obvious reasons, these players are seldom available in-season and traditionally, trades including high-end forwards require weeks of negotiating to work out all of the elements.

Among the big names potentially available - New York's Marian Gaborik might draw some interest in the days leading up to the deadline.

The Rangers aren't shopping Gaborik, who has struggled this season with just 16 goals in 42 games after scoring 42 last year, but word around the league is Rangers GM Glen Sather is willing to listen to offers.

Gaborik agreed to a five-year contract with the Rangers last July and earns $7.5 million per year.

Clearing Gaborik's salary would go a long way in creating flexibility this summer when New York faces a wave of key restricted free agents including Ryan Callahan, Brandon Dubinsky, Artem Anisimov, Brian Boyle and Matt Gilroy.

The Rangers will also have to invent cap space if signing Brad Richards as an unrestricted free agent this summer is a priority.

I’ve received confirmation that Nashville now owns the rights to Pierro-Zabotel and have reassigned him to Cincinnati. The Nailers receive rookies Christiaan Minella and Sam D’Agostino as a result of the trade.

Los Angeles has been very active on the trade front, with reports claiming Lombardi has inquired about New York Rangers right wing Marian Gaborik and Buffalo Sabres sniper Thomas Vanek.

While neither Gaborik nor Vanek appear to be on the market, Lombardi is looking elsewhere and is believed to be dangling the likes of Wayne Simmonds as trade bait.

A number of teams have also approached the Kings about top prospect Brayden Schenn's availability. It was originally thought Schenn was untouchable, but Lombardi has supposedly opened up to the idea of trading away the young center.

Would not be a wise move in my opinion to trade for one of those contracts. Thing of all the young talent they have coming off the books in the near future. Doughty is easily going to demand north of 5 million.

February 11th Dreger Report

1) By acquiring Mike Fisher from the Ottawa Senators, the Nashville Predators - considered a small market, budget-conscious team, have served notice to the rest of the league that they intend to make a run for the Stanley Cup.

The Preds have never made it through the first round of the playoffs and remain among a gaggle of Western Conference teams fighting for a playoff spot. But Nashville GM David Poile believes the components of a championship calibre team are there.

"We have very good goaltending," Poile told The Dreger Report. "We are very good defensively. We lacked a little offence which is why we've added Mike Fisher. We think he can help in that area."

By adding Fisher, Nashville also adds a significant salary to its well managed payroll.

Fisher earns $4 million this year, $4 million next year and then drops to $3 million the year after - the final year of his contract.

Some of Poile's rivals wonder how the addition of Fisher's salary will impact Nashville's budget and perhaps the future of Predators captain Shea Weber - who is scheduled to become a restricted free agent in July.

Poile says there have been multiple discussions with Weber's agents Don Meehan and Craig Oster, but says he intends to leave the heavy negotiations until the offseason.

Traditionally, this is how Poile does his business - even though speculation of Weber being a prime target for an offer sheet or a trade candidate if the contract numbers climb to budget-breaking levels will grow as the year unfolds.

"We intend to do everything we can to sign Shea," said Poile. "I would think our owners committment in adding Mike Fisher is big in Shea Weber's eyes."

It seems unthinkable that the Predators won't find the means to keep Weber in Nashville.

2) At the moment, Detroit Red Wings general manager Ken Holland isn't looking to shake things up. But if his team doesn't improve defensively over the next two weeks, Holland says he may have to do something.

Holland doesn't like the way his team has played the past six weeks, even though Detroit sits second in the Western Conference standings behind Vancouver and third overall.

The Red Wings GM says Detroit is giving up too many goals. Calgary, Columbus, Colorado and Edmonton are the only teams in the West to have given up more goals this season than Detroit.

Holland added he will monitor the play of his team and weigh that against who's available on the trade market before making a decision in a couple of weeks.

3) If Holland is looking for help on his blue line, at least two teams are willing to listen.

The Carolina Hurricanes would consider moving Joe Corvo, Joni Pitkanen or Ian White, but sources say the Canes would need to get a defenceman in return as part of the compensation.

Meanwhile, interest in New York Islanders defenceman Radek Martinek is starting to grow.

Isles GM Garth Snow is asking for a second round draft pick in return.
