TORONTO -- The Monster is joining the Toronto Marlies.

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced Friday that goaltender Jonas Gustavsson has been sent to the American Hockey League on a conditioning stint.

He didn't have to clear waivers and must be returned within two weeks.

With the emergence of James Reimer, the Maple Leafs have been carrying three goaltenders.

Reimer posted his first career NHL shutout in Thursday's 3-0 victory over Carolina.

Gustavsson had only made one start since Jan. 7.

In 23 games this season, he has a 6-13-2 record with 3.29 goals-against average and .890 save percentage.

Gustavsson has played nowhere near the level he needs to play at to be in the NHL.

Yeah..."conditioning". More like, let's see if Reimer is the real deal, or just beginner's luck.

Playing in the minors could potentially boost Gustavsson's confidence assuming he plays well down there.

The Leafs are saying he is being sent down for conditioning so they wouldn't have to put him on waivers but the main reason is he just hasn't been very good.

I feel kinda sorry for Gustavsson. People get excited for the Monster, he has an ok season and now, he's having a mess of a season this year. Hopefully, a stint with the Marlies would help him out.

Yeah, I'm tracking on that. What'll be interesting is if Riemer continues to play lights out hockey & then that 2 weeks expires.

^^Trade rumours will probably swirl around The Monster, let's just hope it doesn't turn into Rask 2.0

I doubt Gustavsson will be traded. If any goalie is traded it would be Giguere but I doubt that would even happen.

Gustavsson made his AHL debut tonight, stopping 24 shots in a 3-1 over the Rochester Americans.

Kadri with a sick goal in the game too on Jacob Markstrom.
