Eagles send Sean McDermott packing
Two years ago, Eagles defensive backs coach Sean McDermott was promoted to the position of defensive coordinator, due to the serious health issues of Jim Johnson, who later would succumb to cancer.

Less than a week after the Eagles’ season ended in the playoffs, McDermott has been fired, according to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen.

Hints of trouble for McDermott came when coach Andy Reid became more involved in the defense. In late October, ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio said that McDermott could soon be out.

“There is no question about that,” Paolantonio said. “I don’t know how much input Dick Jauron has in the defensive game plan, I’m sure he has quite a bit, but eventually they may have to make a switch there.”

Some criticized Paolantonio for suggesting that Reid would fire McDermott. (We suggest that Paolantonio not hold his breath in anticipation of any apologies.)

The move comes at a time when Eagles assistant Dick Jauron is drawing interest in Cleveland. Reid possibly realizes that the time has come to bump Jauron up. To do so, Reid first had to bump McDermott out.

So the Eagles fire Jim Johnson's heir apparent & I'm gonna crow about it. How fair is it to dump McDermott when he was stuck having the scheme against tough opponents...while losing a key starter, just about every week of the season. Linebacking corps was decimated, secondary too, and outside of Trent Cole...he had no solid pass rushers to work with. The Eagles defense wasn't pretty but they held up when it counted and if anything, the team was cast out of the post-season when the offense stopped working.

This is clearly a scapegoat move...probably the last before Andy Reid is finally on the hook.

Its apart of the game, you can't help who you face, but its your job to be prepared. If a player goes down with injury, then the backup better be just as well prepared. That didn't happen. I seriously doubt Reid will be gone anytime soon either, the Eagles had an amazing season. They have to put the blame on something as to why they lost in the playoffs, while it was more than likely Vick slipping through the last couple games. He won't catch blame since this was his magical season.

McDermott in the end, had to go.

McDermott Could Land In Denver, Carolina

NFL.com - Sean McDermott, who was fired by the Eagles on Saturday, could end up with the Broncos or Panthers.

Philadelphia fired McDermott, their defensive coordinator for the last two seasons, after they allowed 31 passing touchdowns and had the NFL's worst red zone defense.

Carolina and Denver are both looking for coordinators.

My point is it's not like the Eagles were completely healthy, playing a soft schedule, and just being obliterated on the defensive side of the ball. The Eagles were thin as shit at Linebacker and in the Secondary, all season long, and they played some tough teams that exploited those weaknesses.

I mean WTF is McDermott to do? I actually thought he had that defense playing better than most could, considering the situation. It won't matter...Andy Reid is about 1 more Super Bowl-less season away from being out on his ass.

JJ did more with less, dont let the injuries be a scapegoat.

mcdermott didnt come close to getting the pressure JJ did with his schemes.

Didn't see this coming, but I don't think he's very good, so it was in the best interest of the Eagles to let him go. I thought he'd get at least another year, but obviously that didn't happen.

Jim Johnson made his money scheming with some of the greatest defensive players in team history. Johnson had one the best secondaries in the league and veteran linebackers. McDermott will never manage to be as great of DC as Johnson but give him some benefit of the doubt, being that he's working with such a young defense.

Whoever succeeds McDermott will look like a fucking genius within 2 years...b/c guys like Nate Allen, Patterson, and Graham will hit their primes.
