School threatens Tacoma student for Steelers jersey

Tacoma, Washington student Grendon Bailie was threatened by middle school administrators with an in-school suspension Friday after showing up in a Steelers jersey on “Seahawks Appreciation Day.” Through a spokesperson, the school explained that Bailie had violated dress code by not wearing blue and green, or his standard school uniform.

“It was Seahawks Appreciation Day, and I’m not much of a Seahawks fan,” said Bailie, 13. “I like the Steelers.”

Spokeswoman Tracy Flores argued that Bailie had the option of wearing a gold polo shirt with black slacks, which would’ve passed dress code.

The school threatened Bailie with a suspension if he did not change his clothes immediately.

Instead, Bailie’s father picked up the young boy and took him home.

What the fuck is this world coming to!?! Seriously?

"Spokeswoman Tracy Flores argued that Bailie had the option of wearing a gold polo shirt with black slacks, which would’ve passed dress code."

The Steelers haven't changed their color scheme since the last time I saw them play...have they??

A student may not have been raised to believe in a single "God"; however, schools could give 2 shits when it comes to the Pledge of Allegiance. But wear a Steelers' jersey on Seahawks' day......GTFO!!!

This is just ridiculous. Nothing really surprises me anymore. People just get ridiculous about the smallest things. Glad the kids dad picked him up and took him home. I wouldn't want to be apart of a school that celebrates the Seahawks either.

yea thats TOTALLTY the point.
People need to just sit back and fucking relax. THATs the cause of our obesity problem. Too much tensed out stressed people that freak out over stuff like a kid wearing a jersey.

the kid was wearin a harris jersey lol

like if it was a Ward jersey, then its slightly less wrong (Ward was SB XL MVP in win over SEA)

but harris is an nfl legend

the kid should move to pennsylvania... get away from WAS

In fact, it's possible that the Steelers and the Seahawks could meet in the Super Bowl again.

"That would be cool," Grendon said, "so we could beat them again."

This kid is a champ. I would have probably done the same thing. It's your choice who you want to support.

I don't see the problem. If you read the article, it says he didn't wear seahawks colors OR his standard school uniform. So apparently they have a dress code in place. He didn't follow the dress code, so he got punished.

pree much. at my school we have a dress code and we have "spirit days" (lol) and if you dont wear a school spirit shirt or uniform you get in trouble.... we also had a chiefs day last week before the playoffs. if you didnt wear Chiefs stuff or uniform, you got in trouble.

now if it was a school with no dress code, then its stupid. but it says they had a dress code.

Exactly what I was going to say. The kid broke the rules, why are you condemning the school?

I'm throwing the bullshit flag on the school's dress code. Well...not the dress code itself but more along the lines of telling kids to wear Seahawks shit or wear your school uniform. That's fucked up. If you're gonna allow kids to wear football jerseys to school for a day...don't stipulate that its Seawhawks only.

The fact that the kid was singled out for wearing a Franco Harris jersey is even more fucked up.

One of those rare times I'm with A.E.
If you're going to let students bypass dresscode to wear sports stuff, let it be whichever team they want. That's how my school was, we had sports days etc. where we could sport any sports gear we wanted aside from just the uniform.

Not really fair imo to leave the kid stuck wearing the regular uniform when other kids are allowed to freely sport other kinds of clothes simply because it's Seahawks affiliated.

This would be like having an in-class Christmas Party and making all the Jewish kids go have a "study hall" in another room.

It was Seahawks appreciation day though, not "wear you favorite teams jersey" day. I understand what you mean, but it wasn't really left open for interpretation...not from the name at least.

They're also in Washington. It's the local team. I would question it more if they were in Bumfuck, Egypt having a Seahawks appreciation day. It seems to me like the kid was just being a smartass wearing his Steelers shit.

Its nit-picky...you can't argue that.

We're basically forcing kids to support a specific team now? And no, you can't say they didn't. It's quite the perk to not have to wear a monkey suit to school on any given day.

No one is forcing anyone to support any team, which is why they had the option to wear something Seahawks or their normal school uniforms. The school is in Washington and were allowing Seahawks fans to show their Seahawk pride after a huge win against the defending champions.

It's segregation...maybe not to the degree of racial or sexual...but it's segregation. You get to do something special at school for a day...but only if you are a Seahawks' fan.

I don't see how there's people that don't see how wrong this is.

I 100% support this schools decision, in fact he should have an expulsion hearing imo.

I'm guessing a jersey in general would have been against school policy.
