The Yankees have begun talks with Andruw Jones

According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, the Yankees have started talks with free agent Andruw Jones, though a deal is not believed to be close. Heyman wrote earlier this week that the Bombers were considering Jones.

The Yankees are pursuing Jones in part because they need a right-handed hitting outfielder, but also because they are concerned about Marcus Thames’ defense. The 33-year-old Thames was a nice surprise last season, batting .288/.350/.491 with 12 home runs, 33 RBI and an 841 OPS, but he can’t touch the versatility or defensive reputation of Jones.

Jones, who will turn 34 in April, batted .230/.341/.486 with 19 home runs and 49 RBI for the White Sox last season, including a .256/.373/.558 batting line in 102 plate appearances against southpaws.

We have become accustomed to players switching teams pretty frequently these days, and Jones has done his fair share of that over the past few seasons, but there would be something weird about seeing him in a Yankees uniform. It feels like it was just yesterday that he hit home runs off Andy Pettitte and Brian Boehringer in Game 1 of the 1996 World Series.

I'd be all for it. This man still hits the ball out of the ballpark like it's nobody's business and he would definitely be a great bat to have off the bench.

lmao, this is what the Yankees are settling for after not signing Cliff Lee. Wow, what has the world come to.... The Yankees shouldve gone out and signed Carl Crawford, Gardner and Crawford to lead your lineup wouldve been deadly on the basepaths.

Spending money to spend money and appease the fanbase is the worst thing an organization can do. We don't have many needs outside of starting and pitching, and Crawford was the last FA on the market that we needed. We need a 4th OF, Andruw Jones would be fine as a 4th OF. We're not settling for anything, we're just picking up an FA at a position of need. Did you want us to go and get a star to be our 4th OF? I don't think they would take that too well.

Im just not sold at all with Curtis Granderson and Brett Gardner for LF and CF respectively. I believe that either one can really regress this upcoming year. With Carl Crawford, the Yankees dont miss a beat and they also ease the transition of Dereks ability deteriorating. Crawford obviously wouldnt have been a 4th outfielder.

Not to be a Yankee hater, but there are definitely more positions then positions they could use upgrades. Outfield and shortstop. Sorry to break it to Yankee fans, but there are players who put up the same numbers at a fraction of the salary at shortstop.

We had one of the better OFs in the league last year. There is nothing to be done to improve there. Carl Crawford or Jayson Werth wouldn't have provided enough up an upgrade over our current OFs to justify the cost, despite it usually not being an issue, we were focused on Lee and rightfully so as it is a much bigger need. There are no upgrades to be had a shortstop whatsoever in the FA market or in the trade market. Jeter still played fairly well last season. There's a ton of shortstops in the league who would beg to have a season that he had last year at the dish.

Marco Scutaro had very comparable numbers last year to Jeter, and he is nowhere near an elite shortstop.

And Marco Scutaro has also never done anything in his career. Jeter gets the benefit of the doubt considering he's been elite his entire career.

Either way, Jeter is done his prime. Of course I would like an upgrade over Scutaro, but if he can produce the same way Jeter can I am fine.

How do you know he's done with his prime? One bad year is an anomaly, two consecutive is a trend. Until he has another average season this year, then I'll still consider him the best SS we can possibly get. And even if he posts the same numbers as last season, he's still one of the better shortstops in the league and the best thing available.

Not the prime thing again.....
You seem to think prime has an age limit. It doesn't.

Prime: the period or state of greatest perfection or vigor of human life.

Dictionary definition.

Mariano Rivera (who we were talking about last time with the prime thing) is still in his prime. He isn't 30 years old anymore where most players peak, but he is still at his peak (in his prime) as evidenced by the fact that he is having just as good if not better years as he was when he was in early 30s.

I think 36 is generally considered out of your prime, or in the tail end at the very least, years. Not to say that Jeter won't be solid or even better than last year, just that expecting an MVP type season is reaching and even unfair to Jeter (never thought you'd hear me say that, huh lol).

You can still have solid years out of your prime, no one said you couldn't. But they are not going to be your best years. Jeter has seen his best years.

I'm not expecting anything close to an MVP type season, he's had maybe 2 of those seasons in his career where he was a legit MVP candidate. But .300 with a .370 OBP and an OPS over .800 with 12 HRs and 20 SBs isn't out of the question.

jeter isnt good anymore

Lowrie>Jeter

And no way is Jeter and Rivera still in their primes

David Ortiz had a really productive year last year. However, he hasnt been in prime since 2008. We can accept it, unlike somebody...
