Grizzles teammates O.J. Mayo and Tony Allen had to be separated during a physical encounter that stemmed from a card game on the team's charter flight Monday, according to team sources.
Mayo owed Allen money from a card game called "Boo-Ray" and he became increasingly belligerent when asked to settle his debt.
According to sources, Allen walked away from Mayo to go to the bathroom. When he returned Mayo continued to berate him and the pair inched close.
Sources say Allen then hit Mayo.
"Tony warned [Mayo] to watch his mouth, and [Mayo] wouldn't do it and just kept going off on him," a source with knowledge of the incident told Yahoo! Sports.
The organization believes Mayo played a bigger role in the incident than Allen.
Mayo missed the team's win over the Thunder on Tuesday night. The Grizzlies listed the reason as bronchitis, but sources said his absence was connected to the incident.
Sources said the two players talked on Monday and Tuesday and both expressed regret about the incident.
