The Yankees are showing interest in free-agent pitcher Jeremy Bonderman, according to a source.

Bonderman went 8-10 with a 5.53 ERA in 30 games for the Tigers last year.

He isn't expected to return to Detroit.

It's insurance most likely. Spot start/mop-up. Maybe challenge some of the other guys competing for the 5th spot to pitch a little better.

You do realized the Tigers have been talking to him too??

The Yankees "show interest" in most if not all free agents that could fill any sort of need. For example, they talked to Carl Crawford even though they had no true intent of signing him. Although, the Yankees showing interest in Bonderman actually makes sense. Personally, with all the injury concerns that come along with Bonderson I wouldn't offer him a major league contract, although I'd be happy to see him sign a minor league deal. Looking at his numbers, there are a few positives. He's a groundball pitcher (44.7% last year), which is a good thing for a RHP in Yankee Stadium. The thing that stands out to me the most is his drop in velocity. It has gradually gone down since 2006 when his fastball was 93.3 MPH to 2010 with it was 89.8. If he can build on what he did in 2010, I think he would make a good #5 starter.

As much as I would love to see the Yankees land Bonderson to a MiLB deal, I'm sure some team is willing to offer him a major league contract.
