The Orioles and free agent first baseman Derrek Lee have reached an oral agreement on a one-year contract pending a physical, according to an Associated Press report.

Orioles president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail disclosed the deal Friday.

The 35-year-old Lee split time with the Cubs and Braves last season, totaling 19 homers and 80 RBIs in 148 games.

Quality pick up for the Orioles, they get their much needed first baseman.

I think it's a solid pickup for the Orioles, Derrek Lee can produce when he wants to, he can be a good baseball player at times, should help the Orioles out a little bit.

Shame that the Braves didn't re-sign him. He deserves a ring and the O's wont do that for him.

This move is ok, but Lee is just going to be a stop gap for the Orioles because Lee is getting older and his numbers dipped this year in comparison to the previous one. He will also be facing a lot of great pitchers in the AL East. I think he wouldve been better suited playing for a team like the Angels or White Sox.

Both the Angels and White Sox don't have any room for him. The Angels have Kendry Morales and the White Sox have Adam Dunn and Paul Konerko.

Good deal for the O's, Derrek Lee can still hit and he can handle the glove pretty good too.

Lee was injured all last season (had thumb surgery in the off-season). If he's alright and picks his production back up it's a very good pick-up.

The White Sox are known for picking up old veterans and thats why I mentioned them. The Angels declined Vlads option and Lee wouldve been a good option for them at DH. Signing older players is always a gamble and I dont think it will pay off with Derek Lee's type of body. Horrible deal for the Orioles because theyre not going anywhere with Lee in the lineup. Shouldve just let the young kids in the minors duke it out.

I don't think he's worth 8 mil but it's only a one year contract so it's w.e. O's have a very good line up.

It was only a matter of time. They had no 1B. Luke Scott was not the answer. Good signing by the O Birds.

They have Freddie Freeman. He's MLB ready, no need to sign an older 1B and block Freeman's development.

The Angels have other, bigger problems to worry about. i.e. another arm in the pen and a 3B.
