I saw this one coming and to be honest, its not a bad idea. Consider the amount of money the city will spend to repair the metrodome roof, the prospect it happening again, and the fact that the team won't spend any longer than 1 more season playing in it.....maybe it is best to play out 2011 at the U of Minny & tell the city to start planning on a demolition. With questions regarding whether the snow damage to the Metrodome can be repaired and if so whether another late-season debacle will unfold in 2011, Vikings owner Zygi Wilf is inclined to play the 2011 season outdoors, at TCF Bank Stadium, according to Chris Mortensen of ESPN.
Wilf wants to play outdoors in 2011
After the roof of the Metrodome collapsed on December 12, the Vikings played one home game at Ford Field and another at TCF Bank Stadium, the fairly new home of the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers. The Vikings lost both games, scoring 10 points combined.
The move outdoors for 2011 wouldn’t be an easy one to accomplish, given that the Vikings remain under contract to play at the Metrodome for one more year. And it could be that Wilf is huffing and puffing in the hopes of getting some concessions from the Metrodome, or possibly some more leverage toward building a new stadium.
The bigger question is whether Wilf will emerge from the experience of the past few weeks wanting the next stadium to be open air. It would give the team a real home-field advantage, a throwback to the days when the Vikings played in the elements — and when they went to four Super Bowls. Since heading indoors, the Vikings have not returned to the championship game a single time.
Of course, Wilf also may decide that he’s had enough of owning a football team, and that he’s ready to cash in his chips and to sell the team to one of the L.A. groups.
