Without ever donning the No. 19 he received after giving up No. 81 toTerrell Owens, wide receiver Antonio Bryant was released by the Bengals Sunday in ending their most disappointing chapter ever in free agency.

Also released was hometown long snapper Mike Windt, the rookie free agent out of Elder High School and the University of Cincinnati. Safety Gibril Wilson was put on season-ending injured reserve with a torn ACL and MCL, but the Bengals still have to make a move with two more players to get to 75 players on the roster by Tuesday.

Even though the move has been speculated for weeks, the decision to cut Bryant is still stunning. And the fact they did it without reaching an injury settlement is even more surprising. It also indicates they must be totally convinced that Bryant's knee injury is serious enough that it was time to cut ties even though they gave him a $7 million signing bonus in March and they signed him to a four-year deal.




What a shame, all of that talent and money most importantly completely wasted, what a shame. What a disappointing day. I was looking forward to see what Bryant could bring to the offense, after all he won't even play in a Bengals uniform and even possibly never play again.

Wow, this hurts for the Bengals.. T.O, Chad, Bryant, that would have been a damn tough cover for defenses.

I'm very disappointed, most disappointed I've been in quite a long time, I was really looking forward to Antonio and got my hopes up. Not much can be said/done, it is what it is. The signing of Terrell Owens is looking very big at this point, lets hope he's productive or were done.

I don't think its too bad they cut Bryant. They still have TO, Ochocinco, Gersham, and Shipley...they have plenty of options.

ason Cole of Yahoo Sports reports the career of wide receiver Antonio Bryant could be in jeopardy because of recurring knee problems that date to the 2009 season, two NFL sources say.

In a surprising move, the Cincinnati Bengals released Bryant on Sunday, a strong indication that Bryant is unlikely to be healthy anytime soon.

”He barely practiced in training camp and now this happens,” said a league source with knowledge of Bryant’s knee problems. ”The guy can’t stay healthy at this point. He gets to the point that he’s feeling good, then it swells on him again. When that keeps happening, that’s a very strong indication that there are structural problems.”



Bryant had offseason surgery on the knee and signed a four-year, $28 million deal with the Bengals in March. He practiced on the opening day of training camp, but didn’t practice again before being let go. Bryant got a $7.85 million signing bonus and would have made another $3 million in base salary had he made the team.

He told reporters during camp that the muscles around the knee weren’t strong enough to support the surgically-repaired joint. This happened after the Bengals’ medical staff saw Bryant before training camp and pronounced him in good enough shape to practice.



Bryant’s knee problems became a significant issue last season when he was playing for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He played 13 games and finished with only 39 receptions for 600 yards and four touchdowns.

Buccaneers cornerback Ronde Barber said Bryant struggled with the knee problem throughout the season.

”He just couldn’t move some weeks,” Barber said. ”He tried, but it obviously was bothering him.”

The news keeps getting worse for Bryant.. Dang.
