Four AL, two NL players confirmed for Monday's showcase

The first six sluggers are ready to swing in the State Farm Home Run Derby.

Four American League All-Stars -- Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera, Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano, Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz and Blue Jays outfielder Vernon Wells -- are the first to represent their league for a crack at the title, which will be part of Gatorade All-Star Workout Day on Monday -- the day before Tuesday's All-Star Game at Angel Stadium.

On the National League side, the first four AL contestants will be joined by Brewers outfielder Corey Hart and Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday, with more participants from both leagues to be announced once they are confirmed.

Of these six players, several have previous Derby experience. Ortiz participated in the Derby each year from 2004-06 and Cabrera took part in the '06 event at PNC Park in Pittsburgh. Holliday competed in the '07 Derby at AT&T Park in San Francisco. Cano, Hart and Wells will be making their Derby debuts.

All contestants are bringing solid credentials to the plate.

Entering Tuesday's games, Hart is tied for third in the NL with 19 home runs. Wells is fifth in the AL with 19 homers and Ortiz is tied for seventh. Cano's .342 batting average is the second-highest in Major League Baseball, while Cabrera's .339 mark is fifth in the Majors. Cabrera's 71 RBIs and .631 slugging percentage lead the Majors

Because they're taking tons of swings, just trying to hit homers, mostly pulling them against not that fast of pitching. Albert Pujols is not in it this year and I think he said it has some to do with it being taxing and it does effect you. Bobby Abreu also said it messed him up the year he won, and Josh Hamilton slumped in the 2nd half of the year he hit all those homers in the derby.

Source: Cano pulls out of HR Derby

Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano is pulling out of Monday's Home Run Derby, according to a source.

Cano accepted the invitation Tuesday, but left open the possibility he might not participate. Yankees manager Joe Girardi and hitting coach Kevin Long both opposed the idea of his participation.

"Physically, I think is somewhat of a grind," Girardi said.

The New York Daily News reported on Wednesday that Cano has dropped out because of a back issue.

Nick Swisher signs up for the Home Run Derby

With Robinson Cano looking on, Nick Swisher will be taking aim at the outfield walls of Angel Stadium on Monday night.

Major League Baseball announced today that All-Star outfielders Chris Young of the Arizona Diamondbacks and Nick Swisher of the New York Yankees have committed to participating in the 2010 State Farm Home Run Derby on Monday, July 12th at Angel Stadium of Anaheim. This will be the first career Derbys for Young (.263, 15 HR, 60 RBI) and Swisher (.304, 14 HR, 48 RBI), both of whom are first-time All-Stars.
