NEW ORLEANS -- Deuce McAllister says he's retiring from pro football.

McAllister hasn't played since 2008 but briefly rejoined the New Orleans Saints last week to serve as an honorary captain for the club's playoff win over Arizona on Saturday.

McAllister confirmed his plans in a text message to The Associated Press. The Clarion-Ledger in Jackson, Miss., first reported the former Ole Miss star's plans on Tuesday afternoon.

The 31-year-old McAllister was drafted in the first round by New Orleans in 2001. He is the Saints' all-time leading rusher with 6,096 yards. His 55 total touchdowns and 49 rushing TDs also are club records. However, he needed reconstructive surgery to repair serious knee injuries in 2005 and 2007.
Well damn.

Deuce McAllister officially announced his retirement from football Tuesday.
McAllister is said to be 30 pounds over his playing weight, and he admits that another knee surgery would likely be required to play again. The Saints can no longer afford to use a roster spot on Deuce with Robert Meachem (ankle) questionable for this week's game against the Vikings. The local hero will continue to serve as honorary captain Sunday. He retires as the Saints all-time leading rusher and touchdown scorer.

Saints needed the roster spot incase Meach can't go Sunday. Deuce will still be on the sidelines.

Since Week 13 Meach has taken 47 snaps per game, to compare our top reciever takes 57. He's become our #3 reciever and rivals our #2. He's also tied for 1st on the team with TD's at nine. Meach has become a huge contributor in this offense.
