SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP)—Alex Smith is the San Francisco 49ers’ new starting quarterback.

Coach Mike Singletary made the announcement Monday after sitting down with Shaun Hill(notes), who was benched at halftime of the Niners’ 24-21 loss at Houston on Sunday. Smith, who hadn’t played in nearly two years, completed his first six passes and finished 15 of 22 for 206 yards and three touchdown passes to tight end Vernon Davis(notes)—and he nearly led the 49ers back from a 21-0 deficit.

Smith, the No. 1 overall draft pick out of Utah in 2005, missed last season after reinjuring his surgically repaired throwing shoulder three days before the season opener.

Singletary said he doesn’t plan to change quarterbacks every week, saying this is not a “flavor of the month” situation.
Good choice IMO. Looks like Smith worked on his stuff but he was playing the Texans and cracked under pressure. Also, not sure if starting him against Indy was the best way for him to make his return to the starting lineup. I'm curious to see how this goes now that this thing is official

I think if Singletary wouldn't have waited 2 quarters to make this decision then the 49ers would be 4-2

No one's asking him to live up to that #1 status anymore. An average NFL QB would be good enough for them I think.

Crabbo and Vernon were getting open for him and you see what he did. He finally used his weapons to his advantage. I still think the 49ers need a better line and another WR because Bruce isn't getting open at all this year. He's gotta be more of a possession receiver and help the QB out.

But if Smith can find Crabbo and VD, then I believe he can do fine

Yeah I agree

He re-worked that huge contract into a backup type QB's contract and now thats all he has to live up to. If he can come in and win some games then I'm happy. He doesn't need to be a pro bowl QB IMO

the defense has been playing pretty solid as of late. they really stepped it up in that 2nd half. aslong as davis keeps producing and crabs can come into his own then theres no reason they can't win. as long as they dont try to get pass happy which i doubt they will they should be fine.

Thwy won't get pass happy. Gore is one of the best backs in the league.

He looked good last week and it looked like he had some chemistry with Vernon Davis, I hope he does well.
