Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher will not play again this season, a source confirmed Monday to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

The six-time Pro Bowler had told the Chicago Tribune in a brief text message early Monday that his season was over.

Urlacher left Sunday's 21-15 loss to the Green Bay Packers with a wrist injury in the third quarter.

Bears coach Lovie Smith said Urlacher dislocated his wrist, and no timetable had been set for his return.

Citing unnamed sources, the Tribune reported on Sunday night that Urlacher will have surgery when the team returns to Chicago. The newspaper reported that Urlacher had an X-ray at halftime, but an MRI was not needed.

"It's always tough to have your leader go down," linebacker Lance Briggs said, according to the newspaper. "He knows the defense better than anybody and he communicates everything to everyone else."

It wasn't clear which play Urlacher was injured on, but he left on Green Bay's first drive of the second half on Sunday night.

Team officials had no other details about the injury.

Urlacher made several plays in the first half, including when he lowered his right shoulder into the quarterback Aaron Rodgers after he had released the ball on a third down to send him sprawling.

<Censored>in' bull<Censored>! Urlacher was looking real good before he went down too. I'm still holding out until Lovie gives his press conference that he might be back, but I doubt it. I'd love to see him man up, put a cast on and go out and play, but I don't know... Tinoisamoa is gonna be down for awhile too, so they're screwed at LB. Hopefully the rumors are true and they'll make a move on Derrick Brooks and move Lance Briggs to MLB, because I don't think I'll be able to watch Hunter Hillenmeyer at MLB for 15 more games. I wouldn't mind him and Roach splitting time at SLB if we sign Brooks to play WLB, but I don't think he can start at MLB.

wow, tough loss for a defense that seemed to have regained it's former stardom 2 years ago.

terriible start to the season for the Bears, Cutler looks horrid in the opener, long snappers making terrible calls AT THE LINE lol and now their anchor on defense is done for the season.

Ive always been a huge fan of Urlacher, and its a shame he's season is over.

But if they should definently look into bringing Derrick Brooks in.

might hurt their chances at the division now, hopefully Cutler can pull it back together and lead this team

Vikings? Yeah, right. I'm taking Green Bay for the NFC rep this year.

Pshh... They barely beat us when our QB threw 4 picks, our LS decided to get smart, and we played the majority of the game without 2 of our 3 LB's. Not making excuses, but just saying...

Green Bay did not look good at all yesterday....shame on those who still believe in Aaron Rogers and "those other guys".

A huge blow to the Bears but in all honesty, Chicago was in no position to compete this year anyways. More than Jay Cutler needs to be added to that offense.

What do you mean shame on you that still believe in Aaron Rodgers? You act like he did bad yesterday. He had no turnovers and came through in the clutch.

Remember the phenomenal start Aaron Rogers got off to last season? What happened to him after like week 3?

He threw for lime 4,000 yards and almost 30 TD's last year in his first season as the starter.

He also threw 13 picks and was sacked 34 times...on the way to a 6-10 record.

Rodgers will very well throw for another 4K and 28 TD's this season too...but what about this team that surrounds him is different than last season? Did Green Bay improve in any areas this off-season? Can't say BJ Raji, the kid hasn't been on the field.

That said, are the Vikings in any worse shape than they were last season?

Green Bay has definitely improved on defense. The preseason and game against the bears proved that.

I guess players can't improve off of last year.. It's not like the Vikings went out and made great moves.. They picked up an aging QB who blows up at the end of the year.
