The Orlando Magic have exercised its right of first refusal and retained restricted free agent center Marcin Gortat, General Manager Otis Smith officially announced today. Per team policy, terms of the deal are not disclosed. Orlando had seven days to match an offer sheet made to Gortat by Dallas on July 8. “Having quality big men is an absolute must in our league, and Marcin (Gortat) has worked very hard to fit into that category,” said Smith. “He provides tremendous depth to our frontcourt and we’re happy to bring him back.”

This shocked me, they have Bass to. Maybe start Gortat, slide Dwight to PF and have Bass off the bench?

They mind as well since he's getting paid starter type money.

Gortat isnt happy about it either, so it only makes it right for them to insert him into the starting lineup. Plus I think he'll be more effective then Bass in the starting lineup anyway.

I'd start Bass over Gortat.

Gortat is better suited off the bench. it worked this year.
Bass starting could get some open looks with all the double teams. he's a nice rebounder and has a good mid rang shot

OR, they now trade him to a team that was wanting him and get something for him.

I bet Hou & Dal still have plenty of interest

Can't trade for like 3 months right? I know there has to be a limit.

Yeah, they can't trade till December. I don't get this for Orlando.

Why would they do this? I don't get it. That is kind of a low blow from Orlando.

Why wouldn't they do this?
They want to keep their front-court depth and Gortat does make them better.

They already said they would be willing to pay the luxury tax to remain a contender or what not.
