Sweet mavs are famous for having 6th man of the year awards all the time. With Van Exel, Jamison, and now JET.

This was the best crop of 6th men ever IMO

Terry, Nate, JSmith all deserved the award...

This award means nothing, players like Terry, Nate and JR Smith are not bench players. They play big minutes and should not be in the running for this award. I have no idea why those guys even come off the bench. You could say there isn't enough room on the starting lineup, but when they receive big minutes they are obviously good enough to stay in there and should be starting. The limit on minutes per game for this award should be like 20.

Still if they come off the bench for a boost.. They play starter minutes, they shouldn't qualify for a bench player award.

Well they get the most minutes because they are the first option off the bench to score or something

Someone who is an actual bench player, and not someone playing 33 minutes a game.

Maybe someone like Chris Anderson who really has no place in the starting lineup. He's right around 20 minutes, blocking shots, getting rebounds, scoring a little. I think he is actually one of the leaders in blocks per game and he is only getting around 20 mins.

6th man basicalliy qualifies as the best player in the league that comes off the bench.

Regardless of how many mins their playing, they're still coming off the bench.

I realize that, I just don't think players who are easily better then the person starting over them and play huge minutes should be considered 6th men even though they come off the bench. Much like how Manu was winning the award. Come's off the bench and plays more minutes in the game then the starter.

I agree all three could have started, but I can speak for the Knicks.

D'Antoni's offense NEEDS a pass first point guard, and Nate has improved as a playmaker, but still isnt where he needs to be to start at point. He's better as the spark off the bench.

I agree, any bench player who gets more mins then a starter should kinda not be allowed to win.
I mean that's how they were voting a couple years ago win people said Manu got snubbed.

Outlaw plays 27.7 MPG

and also

The sixth man in basketball is a player who is not a starter but comes off the bench much more often than other reserves, often being the first player to be substituted in. The sixth man often plays minutes equal to or exceeding some of the starters and posts similar statistics.
