THE UFL IS WHAT WE THOUGHT IT WAS
Posted by Mike Florio on March 9, 2009, 6:57 p.m. EDT
http://www.profootballtalk.com/2009/03/09/...thought-it-was/

He’s back.

According to Howard Balzer of the Sports Xchange, the fourth head coach who’ll be introduced at a Wednesday press conference in San Francisco is former Vikings and Cardinals coach Dennis Green.

Green joins Ted Cottrell, Jim Fassel, and Jim Haslett as the men who’ll run the four UFL franchises. Green will run the San Francisco team, Cottrell will coach the New York squad, Fassel has the Las Vegas team, and Haslett will coach in Orlando.

Green has been doing radio work since being fired by the Cardinals after the 2006 season, which featured this infamous (but incredibly entertaining) event.

Versus To Air Weekly UFL Game
Monday, March 09, 2009
http://awfulannouncing.blogspot.com/2009/0...y-ufl-game.html

The United Football League is trying it's best to get the word out. They've got a handful of recognizable coaches (Jim Fassell, Jim Haslett), have teams in large markets (San Fran, NY, Las Vegas), and now have a TV deal. Versus will air a weekly game for the four-team league, and the first contest will air on October 8th. Via UFL PR....

The United Football League announced that VERSUS, a national sports network in more than 75 million homes, will air the League’s “Premiere” season beginning in October 2009. VERSUS will air live weekly games beginning on Thursday, October 8, and continuing through the Championship Game scheduled to air Thanksgiving weekend. Each live telecast will be approximately three hours and all games will be produced and available in HD. The complete schedule will be announced this summer.

In its “Premiere” year, the UFL will host teams in Las Vegas, New York, Orlando and San Francisco. There are also plans to play additional games in Hartford and Los Angeles. The season will conclude with a Championship Game tentatively scheduled for Thanksgiving weekend in Las Vegas. On Wednesday, the UFL will announce its four coaches at a press conference in San Francisco. League officials are in final negotiations with various stadiums and these agreements will be announced as they are completed.

“We are excited to be the television home of the UFL in its “Premiere” season,” said Marc Fein, Executive Vice President of Programming, Production and Business Operations for VERSUS. “The UFL has put together a great management team and sound plan and we are looking forward to the opportunity to expose these games to a national audience each week.”

This sounds a lot like the All-American Football League and a the story about the league I posted 2 years ago.

I found their website: http://www.ufl-football.com/

Who will play and coach in the UFL?

The UFL will field teams comprised of the best players in the world and tomorrow's rising stars. There are thousands of talented world class players who are looking to play professional football at a high level. The UFL will provide that opportunity. UFL team and League personnel will be seasoned and experienced. Coaches and general managers will consist of current and former NFL coaches, general managers, coordinators & assistant coaches and possibly some NCAA Division I-A coaches.

This league has EPIC FAIL written all over it. Four teams? Six games? Played DURING the NFL & college seasons?

The USFL had guys like Warren Moon, Jim Kelly, and Herschel Walker and failed. When will people realize that you don't mess with the NFL?

The UFL will field teams comprised of the best players in the world and tomorrow's rising stars.
 Yeah....and I got a bridge in Brooklyn I'd like to sell you. Who do they think is buying this crap?

Former NFL coaches Dennis Green, Jim Fassel and Jim Haslett will lead teams in the new United Football League.

The league plans to debut in October with four teams in San Francisco, Las Vegas, Orlando and New York. It announced the coaches Wednesday.

"This will be awesome," Fassel said on a conference call Wednesday. "It's pure coaching -- players that want to get better, players that want to develop. A lot less of the other stuff that's always involved when you're an NFL coach."

Ted Cottrell, a former defensive coordinator for the Chargers, Vikings, Jets and Bills, will coach the New York franchise.

Fassel, who led the Giants to the Super Bowl after the 2000 season, will coach Las Vegas. Green, the former Vikings and Cardinals coach, will be in San Francisco.

Haslett, the ex-Saints coach who served as the Rams' interim coach this past season, will be in Orlando.

UFL games will be played outdoors using NFL rules. The goal is to sign players who just missed making NFL rosters. Players will be able to sign with NFL teams after the short season -- which is scheduled to end Thanksgiving weekend -- but not during it.

"So much of what we do is about developing players and developing coaches," Green said.

Teams are scheduled to play games in Hartford and Los Angeles along with the home markets. The league also announced that the San Francisco franchise will play games at AT&T Park.

The four coaches insisted they weren't looking to use the new league as a launching pad to return to the NFL. UFL commissioner Michael Huyghue, a former Jaguars and Lions executive and agent, said the league plans to eventually offer competitive coaching salaries to the NFL.

"This league, in general what attracted me to it was the people running it," Haslett said.

That's what the All-American Football League thought. They featured some old great coaches, a nice committee of Football 'smart' execs, and even featured several former college stars on rosters.

Even with a handful of major sponsors, the AAFL has phailed to kick-off their inaugural season for nearly 2 years.

http://allamericanfootballleague.com/

The AAFL, which is apparently set to break into their first season in the Spring of 2010, will feature such former College stars: Chris Leak, Peter Warrick, Eric Crouch, Tee Martin, and Shane Matthews as a coach.

The NFL has expressed interest in using the UFL as a developmental league. If they were smart (UFL), they'd accept.
