STEELERS TAG STARKS AS FRANCHISE PLAYER
Posted by Aaron Wilson on February 19, 2009, 3:52 p.m.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have made offensive tackle Max Starks their franchise player, according to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. It’s a transaction that costs $8.45 million against the 2009 salary cap.

The move buys the Steelers more time to try to work out a contract extension for Starks. The NFL deadline to negotiate a long-term deal with franchise players is July 15.

Last year, the Steelers held onto the 27-year-old offensive lineman by using the transition tag on him. That cost them $6.9 million for last season.

Starks started 11 games last season for the Super Bowl champions.

Listed at 6-foot-8, 345 pounds, the former University of Florida player has started 45 games in five NFL seasons.

LOL. Big Ben has like a 10 year contract. You only franchise players with expiring contracts. ;]
