Eric Mangini is out as head coach of the New York Jets, 1050 ESPN Radio and various other New York media outlets are reporting.

Mangini and the Jets missed out on the playoffs after losing to Miami on Sunday. The Jets lost four of their last five games to finish 9-7.

Jets owner Woody Johnson and general manager Mike Tannenbaum will appear at a 10 a.m. ET news conference. Mangini is not expected to attend.

Mangini, 37, was 23-26 in three seasons with the Jets, including 0-1 in the playoffs.

This season, the Jets acquired Brett Favre before the season started and ran off to an 8-3 start. But losses to Denver, at San Francisco, at Seattle and Sunday to the Dolphins left New York on the outside of the playoffs for the second straight season.

YES! THANK GOD!

An 8-3 team can not finish 9-7, it's not possible, unless the team is poorly coached.

Favre played horribly down the stretch, but let's be honest, you cant toss him out quickly because he brought a spark to this team that had what? 4 wins last year?

Mangini was bound to get fired, I could tell all year that there was some sort of problem between him and Favre.

BTW< I found this amusing this morning because last night on ESPN they were saying how the GM's would spend the entire week to evaluate people before making any decisions. So much 4 that...

Jets fire Mangini after late slide to miss playoffs

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) - Eric Mangini had the New York Jets in first place a month ago, a special season shaping up for a franchise sorely in need of one.

Four losses in five games dashed the Jets' Super Bowl hopes with a thud, and cost the coach his job.

Mangini was fired Monday, a day after New York failed to make the playoffs despite an 8-3 start and having an NFL-high seven Pro Bowl selections.

News of the firing was first reported by FOXSports.com's Jay Glazer.

"I feel that we let him down and we could have done a better job of making plays," wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery said. "It's tough."

Behind quarterback Brett Favre, the Jets beat New England and Tennessee on the road in consecutive weeks, raising visions among fans of the team's first Super Bowl trip since 1969. New York controlled its playoff fate while sitting alone atop the AFC East before the late-season free fall.

"I don't think it was one thing," owner Woody Johnson said. "We had to go in a different direction. There's nothing specific. It's just a call we made. Hopefully, it's correct."

The 37-year-old Mangini went 23-26 in his first head coaching job, and had another year remaining on his contract.
Another testament to exactly how impatient New York is when it comes to sports. Although it was rumored a likely possibility, I am kinda shocked that they gave up on him already. The Jets collapsed late in the season but you can't say Mangini didn't make some pretty big strides in turning that team around. I would of given him at least another season.

Either way, Favre is done. Highly unlikely he is willing to deal with a 4th head coach in as many years. The game has also taken it's toll on Favre's body this season & he's feeling it.

Yeah, they finished off badly with a 9-7 record after starting 8-3, but they booted him too early. They just had too many high expectations when they brought Favre in, and expected nothing less but the playoffs, and when they didn`t get there, they decided it must be Manginis fault. When. in reality, it`s Favres and the GMs`.

Favre threw 2 TD`s & 9INTs in their last 5 games, and his arm was hurting him more than ever. He was finally realizing he should`ve stayed retired, and if he doesn`t retire now, he might just die out there.

GMs` fault in getting rid of Pennington. He was trying to put the blame on Mangini when they let go of Pennington, who took a Dolphins team that went 1-15 last year, to an 11-5 playoff team, because he was their QB, and now he`s in Miami. He made a mistake and doesn`t feel like admitting it, or so it looks like to me anyways.

I mean, i`m not saying Mangini would`ve done great things for the Jets, but he was 23-26 in three seasons with the them, including 0-1 in the playoffs. 3 more losses than wins in 3 years?? Big Whoop, a lot better than the Lions or the Browns coaches records. Plus, he got them to the Playoffs one year, they lost, but they still got there. He was just booted waay too early, IMO.
