Lewis: Surgery not advised

Updated: 4:20 p.m.

Marvin Lewis said at his Monday news conference that the orthopedic doctors that have met with Carson Palmer have suggested there is no need for surgery to repair the partially torn ulna collateral ligament in his throwing elbow.

"Every indication of every football orthopedist that has seen Carson is there will probably be no need for surgery.," Lewis said.

Palmer has also met with baseball specialists in New York and Los Angeles.

But a final decision has yet to be made because Palmer has not gone through 100 percent of his throwing rehab and has not yet thown routes or thrown his fastest and deepest balls. Lewis didn't say there was a drop-dead date when he would need the surgery, but he also said if things stay the same he won't need it.

"He's done well in everything thus far," Lewis said. "He's had no with the issues he was dealing with before. I think he's excited about it, so we'll allow him to continue further and harder with more regularity. More throws."

Palmer said Sunday he has yet to cut it loose and is now up to 25 yards or so.

Lewis also wouldn't rule him out for the final two games, but did say that Sunday's game against the Redskins was a longshot.

Lewis said that three players who have missed the last several games, left tackle Levi Jones (back), Antwan Odom (shoulder), and safety Chinedum Ndukwe (foot), have a chance to play this Sunday. Running back Kenny Watson (hamstring) limited the past couple of games before sitting out last Sunday, has a chance to reuturn. Running back Chris Perry re-aggravated a groin strain and is questionable.

Defensive end Eric Hendersn (neck) and tight end Ben Utecht (foot) are the most questionable heading into the week.

:) :D Let's hope the good news for Palmer continues.

that's always good to hear. I guess it's not that serious, or it just happens to be healing up well.

It is great news for me to hear. As long as everything continues to go well. I'll be happy and it'll be the best thing that's happened to the Bengals all year.

I loved Carson back when he was at USC (in case u didn't know, I'm a big USC fan) and was one of my favorite pro QB's about 2 or 3 years ago, back when the Bengals were a dominant team. They've had to overcome all these obstacles with injuries and suspensions, all these off field incidents that have hurt them and are obviously going to downgrade everyone elses performance.

He'll be back to normal by 2010, I guarantee it. He's still very young and very talented, he has plenty of time to overcome this major speed bump. Whether or not he stays with Cincinnati all the way through his contract idk. Especially if he gets hurt again, who knows if they'll hang onto him.

They have definitely had a lot going on as far as injuries/suspensions/distractions you name it. Chad Johnson continues to give piss poor effort every week. If Carson comes back 100% he should be fine as long as we have a better offensive line.

You definitely need a better offensive line and shore up that defense big time. The Bengals got the big explosive offense. They have holes to fill this offseason, if they shore up those holes, then, you got yourself a much better future outlook. I still think they need to fire Marvin Lewis, but knowing Mike Brown, he won't do it. Lewis is sole reason to why these players just can't seem to play well. TJ and Chad can't stand one another, so one of them is outta here. My guess would be Chad.

Chad doesn't want to be in Cincy anyways so he mise well just go. He's putting up piss poor efforts week in week out. I'm sick of hearing his mouth and he thinks it's all about him. As far as defense it's always been a struggle and we brought in a new defensive coordinator to try helping matters but I think the Bengals need to give him more time than one year with what he was given. Marvin Lewis most likely will not be fired. Mike Brown said he can be the coach of Cincinnati until whenever. So, I personally don't see any changes there. Your guess on Chad being gone will most likely be correct. As yes, they have several holes to fill. Our center is probably the worst center in football. On a constant basis I always see him getting knocked on his ass and the whole defense is flying up the middle. They do NOT need to play Carson this year. Let him rest from here on out for the remainder of the year. Knowing him he wants to play though no matter what.
