Palmer expects to throw this week; decision on surgery to follow

Associated Press

CINCINNATI -- Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer plans to test his right elbow in the next few days, giving him a better idea of whether he will need reconstructive surgery.

Palmer said Wednesday that he's still on schedule to throw a football at the end of the week, the first time he's done so in nine weeks. The elbow was injured when his arm got hit as he threw a pass in the third game of the season against the Giants.

If Palmer's elbow is still bothering him when he resumes throwing, he'll likely have reconstructive surgery.

"Like I keep saying, if I knew I had to have the surgery, I'd already have it done," Palmer said Wednesday. "I'll see what the doctors say, have it checked out and go with a professional decision from a doctor."

Palmer partially tore a tendon and ligament from the bone in his right elbow. He rested one week, then played in a loss at Dallas on Oct. 5. He realized he couldn't throw the ball as hard as normal in that one, and began the recommended rehabilitation of two months' rest followed by some throwing.

Palmer has thrown a sponge football during his rehabilitation, but only about 10 yards.

"But it was accurate, though," he said. "A tight spiral."

He'll make some short throws with an NFL football at about half-speed at the outset.

"I'll just be starting to throw," he said. "You don't jump back on the bike and go off 10-foot jumps. You just kind of start 10-, 12-yard throws, 50 percent, 60 percent and so on, and then make a determination on the surgery -- who knows? -- a week, two weeks after that. It depends on how far in the progression I get."

The Bengals were 0-4 under Palmer and have gone 1-8-1 under backup Ryan Fitzpatrick. At 1-10-1, they have the second-worst record in the NFL, trailed only by the winless Detroit Lions.

He should've had surgery already... That way he can get ready for next season quicker. The Bengals can't make the playoffs even with him at this point....

He's hoping he doesn't need to have surgery. He's trying to avoid it if possible.

I guess it depends. Some have surgery and play just fine and some don't play as good.

If he needs surgery this late in the season we mise well say next year = good bye! As in were in trouble. We'll win 1 game hopefully. Because if Fitzpatrick is still the backup we'll be lucky to get one win as we have this year. I'll be even more disgusted because I'm sure he wouldn't be back in time. Please no surgery.

You've got to be kidding me, right?

nope been sayin this since the preseason.. Fitz is the future of the bengals and how they need to start running their offense.. give him time and let him play it out.. i guarentee he will be better for the bengals then palmer...

Funny thing is..... SOME bengal fans were wanting Fitzpatrick and it has backfired in their faces. Everytime he throws the damn ball it's either deflected or 10 feet over the WR's head. If this is the case please draft another QB. We'll be worse than the Detroit Lions of this year. They liked what they seen out of Fitzpatrick during PRESEASON against backup defenses... Yeah, that's something to be proud of.... His accuracy sucks....

Palmer is the leader of this team and has a LOT more potential than Fitzpatrick. I'd rather see Jordan Palmer be playing at this point in time. I can't even watch any of their games Fitzpatrick embarasses me soo much as does the rest of the team.

As Ocho Cinco said in quote "He's not golden boy 9" referring to Fitzpatrick.

TOTALLY disagree.. Palmer is an elite QB.. they should bench him and save him for next year.. he's their only chance to make the playoffs any time soon

I agree.

If Fitzpatrick becomes our QB than I better just retire from watching football. I've never seen this offense so far off in my life as it is with Fitzpatrick. Let alone watching him play makes me sick. I can't get much sicker than I already am from this team.

If they were to do something so absurd such as this than I guess the owner really does want the team to fall of the face of earth. :headsmack: :headsmack: :headsmack: :headsmack: :headsmack: :headsmack:

I cannot believe what I just read. If we don't get Palmer back were done. Simple as that. Were done. Their won't no longer be a Cincinnati Bengals team existent in the NFL.

I bet you any money, if I was to show up invited to Training Camp and Palmer was out for the year, I would be the starter. I played HS and College Ball. I played some QB on both levels, but I am more of a fullback. I have accuracy and arm strength. I mean how hard is it for TJ, Chris, and Chad to catch the football? Of course, it seems as if they got butterfingers. If they try hard enough, I am sure I could win some games for em. I can run very well for a big guy.
